Public Police Log - Policies and Guidelines
PUBLIC POLICE LOG
The Northeastern University Police Department (NUPD) produces a written, clearly understandable daily crime log that is available to the public. This daily crime log is produced following the regulations and guidelines of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, 20 USC 1092 (f), 34CFR668.46 ("The Clery Act") and by Massachusetts General Laws (MGL) Chapter 41, § 98F.
The purpose of the daily crime log is to provide information about valid crimes, criminal complaints, and other significant incidents occurring on campus and involving our community.
AVAILABILITY
The daily crime log shall be publicly available for viewing, without cost, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00AM to 4:00PM, to anyone who requests it. No personal information will be necessary to view the daily crime log and any member of the public may request access to the public log. Logs shall remain open and available upon request for sixty (60) days. Logs older than sixty (60) days shall be made available within two (2) business days of the request. A three-ring binder of at least the past sixty (60) days of daily log is maintained by the NUPD Administrative Assistant/Clerk.
CONTENT OF THE DAILY LOG
The daily crime log shall be officially entitled the NUPD Public Police Log. The NUPD Public Police Log shall contain a list of the following incidents:
- All crimes reported to NUPD that occurred on campus or within NUPD patrol jurisdiction.

All NUPD responses to valid crime complaints, including criminal incidents and incidents that may result in administrative action by the University.
Recording of incidents shall be chronological according to the time each incident was reported and each incident provides at least the following information:
- Date and Time Incident Reported
- Date and Time Incident Occurred
- Type of Incident
- Location of Incident
- Disposition of Incident
Further information may be included on the daily log for additional detail or reference (e.g. incident summaries or report numbers). Any of the above information may be withheld if there is clear and convincing evidence that the release of the information would jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation or the safety of an individual; cause a suspect to flee or evade detection; or result in the destruction of evidence. Once the threat is no longer valid, the information must be disclosed and the incident updated in the daily log.
Confidentiality is of vital importance and is a guiding principle regarding the NUPD Public Police Log. No names, other than those of arrestees, are contained in the daily crime log. If an arrest is made, the name, age, and residence of the arrestee is included in the daily log along with the criminal charges being filed against the arrestee.
Dispositions found in the daily log are a brief summary of how the incident concluded or whether the investigation is on-going or resolved. To further understand these dispositions listed in the daily log, use the following disposition descriptions:

When changes in disposition become known, updates to the originating log entry shall be made within two business days of when that information becomes available.
