The entire Department of Psychology is excited to introduce Derek M. Isaacowitz, Ph.D, our newest faculty member. Derek joins us as an Associate Professor of Psychology in the Social and Personality area, and is director of the Lifespan Emotional Development Lab (LEDlab).
Prof. Isaacowitz grew up in New York City, discovered a love for Psychology as an undergraduate at Stanford, and did his Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. After earning his Ph.D. in 2001, he joined the faculty at Brandeis University, and was there until making the move to Northeastern in January 2012. According to Prof. Isaacowitz, “I was convinced to move my lab down the MassPike by Northeastern’s commitment to the science of psychology generally, and the study of emotion more specifically.”
Prof. Isaacowitz considers himself a life-span developmental social psychologist, and his research is interested in how the regulation of emotional experiences, and perception of emotions in others, varies as a function of age. For example, in what ways do older and younger individuals differ in how they respond to negative information, and how can we understand the reasons for age-related differences in emotion recognition accuracy? To investigate these questions, Prof. Isaacowitz’s lab uses a variety of different methods, including eye tracking, physiological recording, and a number of different behavioral paradigms.
Prof. Isaacowitz’s LEDlab will be hiring undergraduates to join the lab; if you are interested, please email him at dmi@neu.edu. Prof. Isaacowitz will also be teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, including Social Psychology.
