Northeastern University invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The university is seeking a dynamic leader who will serve as an intellectual catalyst for a vibrant and growing academic community. The Provost’s key role is to promote an environment of creativity and innovation, aligning academic priorities and initiatives across the university.
Northeastern University, founded in 1898, is a private national research university offering a comprehensive range of programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in six undergraduate colleges and eight graduate and professional schools. The university maintains one of the largest and most innovative cooperative education programs in the world, and is “Most Selective” in undergraduate admissions. Located in the heart of Boston, near the financial district and in the biomedical research corridor, Northeastern enrolls over 15,000 undergraduate students and 5,000 graduate students.

The university’s academic plan articulates five overarching themes:

This academic plan is being implemented through the development of collaborations across the colleges, schools, and research centers of the university and through strategic partnerships with research hospitals and institutes, museums, corporations, and universities around the world. The Provost plays a central role in creating and nurturing these affiliations, maximizing the potential for ongoing success.
Northeastern University is noted for its commitment to interdisciplinary and translational research, founded upon strong research in the disciplines. The university is home to 34 research centers and institutes, 14 of them headed by professors who hold endowed chairs or distinguished professorships. Through the Interdisciplinary Faculty Initiative, Northeastern is creating 30 senior-level appointments for faculty colleagues whose work is focused on the intersection of disciplines, in addition to recruiting 100 new faculty members in a wide range of disciplines across the university.
The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of scholarly and professional accomplishments suitable for a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor. The university seeks an individual with a strong record of academic leadership and management in a complex institutional environment, a commitment to excellence, and the ability to articulate and advance the university’s mission and academic plan to both internal and external constituencies.
