On August 6-8, PROTECT Project 5 trainees and researchers attended the 15th International Symposium on Electrokinetic Remediation (EREM2017) organized by the Department of Building Civil and Environmental Engineering (BCEE) at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. PROTECT co-director and Project 5 leader Prof. Akram Alshawabkeh serves as a member of the scientific committee for EREM conferences, and in 2013, he hosted EREM at Northeastern University. The conference brought over 40 experts in the field of electrokinetics to share the latest research in applications of electrochemical processes for remediation of soils, sediments and other materials; recovery of metals, organic compounds, phosphorous; water, wastewater, and sludge treatment; industrial production processes (agriculture, food industry, mining, etc.), and medical sciences.

PROTECT Project 5 trainees Shirin Hojabri and Shadi Hamdan presented in the poster session while Dr. Ljiljana Rajic and Yuwei Zhao presented Project 5 accomplishments during technical sessions. Learn more about each team member’s presentation below.

Shirin Hojabri (PhD student)

Title:  Modeling of reactive species transport and transformation in batch and flow-through electrochemical systems

Shadi Hamdan (visiting scholar)

Title:  The potential of using an electro-migration barrier to control seawater intrusion

Dr. Ljiljana Rajic (associate research scientist)

Title:  Electrochemical degradation of trichloroethylene in aqueous solution by bipolar graphite electrodes

PhD student Yuwei Zhao (PhD student)

Title:  Electro-Fenton reaction: Performance under flow conditions
