04.08.10: The College of Engineering Donor Centennial Celebration & Outstanding Alumni Awards
President Joseph Aoun and David Luzzi, Dean of the College of Engineering, joined alumni to celebrate the college’s 100th anniversary. The event spotlighted the college’s rich history and bright future, and alumni were also honored with outstanding alumni awards in recognition of distinguished leadership and achievement in engineering. 04.02.10: Human Rights Week
Northeastern President Joseph Aoun with members of Net Impact Undergraduate, a student group dedicated to using business theory and knowledge to solve problems and educate others on the importance of social responsibility. As part of Human Rights Week, members of the student group built the Poverty Awareness Shack, an 8' by 8' by 8' home made out of sustainable material from around the city, in order to simulate the living conditions for a family in a developing country. 12.02.09: Student engineers meet with President Aoun
President Aoun and David Luzzi, Dean of the College of Engineering, met with a group of engineering students who won a national competition for building a car that ran on chemical reactions. President Aoun meets with a group of 45 Dorchester Academy high-school students, who spent the day touring and mingling with Northeastern student scholars. The purpose of the visit was to help prepare the seniors and juniors for the college admissions process and relay information about scholarship opportunities through Northeastern’s Torch and Boston Public High School Scholarship programs. President Joseph Aoun, Boston Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino and Children’s Hospital Boston CEO Dr. James Mandell, who were joined by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, announced a collaborative new educational pilot program, Healthy Kids, Healthy Futures. The initiative will help Boston preschoolers in four city neighborhoods learn to eat healthier. President Aoun makes remarks at a ceremony to launch the newly funded Center of Awareness and Localization of Explosives-Related Threats (ALERT), a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center of Excellence. 10.18.08: 35th Anniversary Dinner for the Barnett Institute
President Aoun presents certificates of appreciation to Louis and Madalyn Barnett, longtime benefactors of the Barnett Institute, and to Dr. Barry Karger, director of the Institute and James L. Waters Chair in Analytical Chemistry. The Barnett family recently gave $3 million to the Barnett Institute to support the launch of the new Center for Advanced Regulatory Analysis, which promises to be the preeminent research center of its kind. 10.18.08: Homecoming 2008
President Aoun attends the Homecoming Weekend football game with Chairman of the Board Sy Sternberg, where fans cheered Northeastern on against the University of New Hampshire. During halftime the Homecoming King and Queen were crowned. Husky football did not emerge victorious, but better luck was had by Husky hockey (the menâ€™s team beat Boston College and the womenâ€™s team topped Providence College) and volleyball (the team beat the University of North Carolina, Wilmington). Overall, a celebratory mood prevailed over the weekend, beginning on Friday night with the comedy of Jon Stewart, host of the Daily Show, and continuing Saturday and Sunday with the annual Homecoming Carnival and Parade, Husky FanFest, Head of the Charles, alumni events, and the first annual arts festival. 10.15.08: State of the University Town Hall Meeting
President Aoun delivered his annual State of the University address to an audience of more than 300 faculty, students, and staff at a town hall meeting held in Curry Ballroom. President Aounâ€™s remarks centered on the challenges and opportunities the current world financial crisis affords the university in the coming months. He cited curricular and management innovation, as well as setting research and academic priorities as broad areas of opportunity and change for the university. 10.10.08: Conference Asks: Do Institutions Matter?
President Aoun gave welcome remarks at a luncheon during the Conference on International Entrepreneurship and Institutional Theory, cosponsored by Northeastern University, Texas Christian University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The topic of the conference, which attracted scholars from universities around the world, was the role institutions play in entrepreneurship in the international arena. The keynote speakers at the conference were: Professor Dick Scott of Stanford University; Professor Max Boisot of the University of Birmingham in the UK; and Northeastern alumnus Professor Michael Tushman of Harvard Business School. 10.09.08: Gallery 360 opens on campus
President Aoun attends the opening of Gallery 360, Northeasternâ€™s new on-campus art gallery located in Ell Hall. The first show is called â€œWild Ones,â€ and features the work of found-object sculptor Michael Ulman, AS â€™00. 10.2.08: Tribute to Keven Fitzgerald
President Aoun delivers remarks at a tribute to the life and legacy of Kevin Fitzgerald, a beloved and longtime public servant in the Boston community. The event was held to honor Fitzgerald and to officially dedicate the Urban Youth Sports program he cofounded at Northeastern in his name. The program, now called the Kevin W. Fitzgerald Urban Youth Sports Programâ€”or Fitz Youth Sports, will continue to be housed at Northeastern University and includes the several initiatives that help foster physical activity, healthier lifestyles, and confidence among the young people in our communities. The event raised more than $750,000 for the Kevin W. Fitzgerald Fund, which provides resources to sustain and expand Fitz Urban Youth Sports. Photos by Bill Brett
9.25.08: CEO Breakfast Forum
President Aoun makes remarks at Northeasternâ€™s CEO Breakfast Forum. The forum, held at the Four Seasons and attended by many prominent Boston business leaders, featured James Roosevelt, Jr. president and chief executive officer of Tufts Health Plan. Roosevelt, who is also chairman of the board of directors for the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans and grandson of President Franklin Roosevelt, spoke to the audience about the cost and quality of health care in the United States. 9.25.08: President Aoun meets with the Student Government Association
President Aoun hosts an open-forum conversation with members of the Student Government Association and leaders from a variety of student organizations. Approximately 50 students attended. He summed up Northeasternâ€™s commitment to making the Northeastern experience all it can be for students, citing advancements made in greening the campus, expanding experiential education, and increasing our global reach. He also thanked the SGA for its leadership and engagement in setting a common set of priorities, encouraging them to continue this productive path. 9.18.08: Dinner honoring Chairman Emeritus Neal Finnegan
President Aoun hosts a dinner in honor of Chairman Emeritus Neal Finnegan, â€™61, Hon. â€™98, following a reception and dedication ceremony. The dinner was attended by Finneganâ€™s Board and University colleagues, friends, and family members. Vice Chairman of the Board Jean Tempel gave remarks, as did Finnegan Scholar Sylvia Warot, â€™08, Cardinal Sean Oâ€™Malley, and Chairman Sternberg, â€™68 . Finnegan was presented with a Northeastern sailorâ€™s hat as a token of appreciation for steering the Northeastern â€œshipâ€ with such a steady and fearless hand. 9.18.08: Dedication of Finnegan Plaza
President Aoun announces the dedication of the Veterans Memorial space in honor of Chairman Emeritus Neal Finneganâ€™s service. The area surrounding the memorial, literally at a crossroads of what is both old and new at Northeastern, will be known as Neal F. Finnegan Plaza. The plaza is marked by a stone bearing its name, which was unveiled by President Aoun, Chairman Sternberg, and Chairman Emeritus Finnegan, â€™61, Hon. â€™98. 9.18.08: Reception honoring Chairman Emeritus Neal Finnegan, â€™61, Hon. â€™98
President Aoun hosts a reception prior to a dedication ceremony and dinner honoring Chairman Emeritus Neal Finnegan, â€™61, Hon. â€™98. Finnegan served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2008. He joined the Board in 1988. Under his leadership, Northeastern dramatically increased its retention rates, raised its academic profile, built a residential campus, and strengthened its faculty body. 9.08.08: Presidentâ€™s Convocation for the 111th entering class
President Aoun welcomed students in the 111th entering class at the annual Presidentâ€™s Convocation ceremony. Northeastern University doesnâ€™t want to train students for their first career, their second or even their third, President Joseph Aoun told the incoming freshmen class. â€œOur goal is to get you ready for life,â€ he said. Provost Stephen Director served as master of ceremonies. Students also heard addresses from Student Government Association President Rob Ranley and Hodgkinson Scholar Kiette Tucker, as well as performances by Distilled Harmony, the Downbeats, and the NU Pep Band. â€œThe value of your education is that you are now able to negotiate and face the unknown,â€ asserted President Aoun during his address during the Fall Commencement ceremony. Graduates also heard from two keynote speakers, Peter and Ellen Zane. Peter and Ellen are pillars of the Boston business community, and passionate enthusiasts of Northeasternâ€™s unique model of education. Ellen has been on the Northeastern Board of Trustees since 1994, and together she and her husband have generously supported Presidential Scholars from the BouvÃ© College of Health Sciences. President Aoun attends a barbecue celebrating the opening day of the Atlanta-based Universoul Circus, which ran through Sunday of the holiday weekend. 6.27.08: President congratulates graduates of the Mayorâ€™s Youth Council
President Aoun attends a celebration honoring this yearâ€™s graduates of the Mayorâ€™s Youth Council. The program provides Boston's young people with an active role in addressing youth issues. High-school juniors and seniors are selected to serve as volunteer representatives of every neighborhood in the city where the young advocates provide outreach to Boston teens, inform them of existing opportunities, and listen to suggestions on what the city can do to improve its youth oriented efforts. 5.22.08: Annual meeting of the Corporation
President Aoun meets with the Universityâ€™s Corporation to report on the institutionâ€™s accomplishments over the past year, and outline Northeasternâ€™s vision for the future. The meetingâ€™s agenda also included a financial report by Treasurer William E. Kneeland, Jr., consideration of the election of the University auditor for FY2007-2008, a report from the Committee on Trusteeship, recognition of newly elected members of the Governing Boards and service of those stepping down, and remarks from Chairman Finnegan and Chairman Elect Sy Sternberg. President and Mrs. Joseph Aoun hosted a special reception prior to Northeastern Night at the Pops to recognize Northeasternâ€™s most generous annual donors. 5.05.08: End-of-year barbecue for faculty and staff
President Aoun mingles with faculty and staff at the annual end-of-year appreciation barbecue. Commencement exercises for the 106th graduating class unfold during a morning ceremony held at TD Banknorth Garden and an afternoon ceremony held at Matthews Arena. 5.01.08: President hosts Honorary Degree Recipients Dinner
President Aoun asks this yearâ€™s honorary degree recipients to reflect on their own commencements during a special dinner held in their honor. Those who attended the dinner included Nancy Zimpher, president of the University of Cincinnati; the Honorable Margot Botsford, Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court; Dr. Sylvia Hurtado, professor and higher education scholar from UCLA; Michael Cronin, vice chairman of the Board of Trustees; Henry Nasella, director of fundraising for the Board of Trustees; and Katherine McHugh, a 25-year veteran of the Board. 4.29.08: President hosts dinner to celebrate Northeasternâ€™s partnership with Hebrew College
President Aoun welcomes members of the Hebrew College community, as well as members of the greater Jewish community to a dinner celebrating the unique and expanded partnership between Northeastern and Hebrew College. President Aoun hosted a special dinner at the Fenway Center to honor and thank the family of Anthony Manganaro for their unwavering support of the Torch Scholars program. Recently, the Manganaros bolstered the unique and highly successful program with a gift of $7.5 million. Anthony, and Michelle Manganaro and their children, Todd Manganaro, BA '95, and Nicole D'Amore, L'97, helped to develop and launch the program with an initial gift of $1.25 million. Northeastern Universityâ€™s Latino/a Student Cultural Center (LSCC) won the bid to hold the 6th Annual New England Latino Student Leadership Conference (NELSLC). The conference helps to culminate a year of celebration of Latino activism and leadership on campus as the LSCC celebrated its 10th Anniversary. Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, give President Aoun the highlights of their poster presentations at the 6th Annual Research & Scholarship Expo. The Expo was the largest ever, with 262 posters. It also had broadest scope of disciplines in the history of the Expo, with abstracts of projects in the humanities, arts, social sciences, business, law, health sciences, technology, engineering, life sciences, and computer and information sciences. 3.13.08: President Aoun makes remarks at Senate field hearing hosted by Senator Edward Kennedy at Northeastern
President Aoun welcomes the U.S. Senate's Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions to Northeastern, where Senator Kennedy presided over a field hearing to discuss how to ensure access to college in a turbulent economy. The field hearing coincided with Northeastern's announcement earlier in the day that it will move to a direct lending program beginning this fall. This significant move will allow students and families to access Federal low-cost educational loans.
3.11.08: President Aoun welcomes Dean Luzzi to Northeastern
President Aoun makes welcoming remarks at a dinner held to welcome David Luzzi as dean of the College of Engineering. Dean Luzzi joined Northeastern in the fall of 2007 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was known as a distinguished scientist and innovator. Hosting the dinner was Provost Ahmed Abdelal. In attendance were College of Engineering benefactors Bernard Gordan and his wife Sophia, who recently gave $20 million to support the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems and establish the Gordon Engineering Leadership Program, as well as number of faculty and members of the Provostâ€™s Office. 3.3.08: Biogenerics 2008 Conference
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and President Aoun spoke at a dinner held during BIOGENERICS 2008: An Open Forum on the Scientific and Regulatory Issues. The Barnett Institute at Northeastern University, a leader in bioanalytical research, hosted the three-day long forum. The conference underscored the leadership role in analytical and scientific aspects of protein analysis by bringing constituents together to address unmet scientific needs of regulators. 3.02.08: Annual Winter Golf Classic and Alumni Reception and Dinner
President Aoun attends the Alumni Reception and Dinner following the Annual Winter Golf Classic hosted by Mel, Pâ€™56, and Martha Aronson at the exclusive Boca Raton Resort and Club in Florida. About sixty alumni and friends participated in the golf tournament, and more than 300 alumni and friends attended the reception and dinner. 2.29.08: Alumni Gather to Watch Husky Baseball Squares Off Against the Boston Red Sox
Nearly 700 alumni and friends attended the event at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Florida which was hosted by the Naples Alumni Chapter. Alumni and friends from 17 states--including some from as far away as Wisconsin and California-- helped account for the largest turnout in the history of the event. Participants enjoyed a barbecue luncheon at the park, and event emcee Jack Moynihan, MPA'93, Vice President of Alumni Relations and the Northeastern Fund, kept things going as the crowd heard remarks from Northeastern President Joseph E. Aoun; Northeastern baseball coach Neil McPhee, Ed'68; Husky pitcher Kris Dabrowiecki; and Sam Kennedy, Larry Lucchino and Tom Warner of the Boston Red Sox.
2.15.08: President Aoun attends robot unveiling
President Aoun attends the unveiling of the robot that will compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Boston Regional Robotics Competition in March. The robot was built in 6 weeks by the NUTRONS, a team of Northeastern University engineering students and local high school kids.
