Human Rights Week
Northeastern President Joseph Aoun with members of Net Impact Undergraduate, a student group dedicated to using business theory and knowledge to solve problems and educate others on the importance of social responsibility. 35th Anniversary Dinner for the Barnett Institute
President Aoun presents certificates of appreciation to Louis and Madalyn Barnett, longtime benefactors of the Barnett Institute, and to Dr. Barry Karger, director of the Institute and James L. Waters Chair in Analytical Chemistry. The Barnett family recently gave $3 million to the Barnett Institute to support the launch of the new Center for Advanced Regulatory Analysis, which promises to be the preeminent research center of its kind. Homecoming 2008
President Aoun attends the Homecoming Weekend football game with Chairman of the Board Sy Sternberg, where fans cheered Northeastern on against the University of New Hampshire. During halftime the Homecoming King and Queen were crowned. Husky football did not emerge victorious, but better luck was had by Husky hockey (the men’s team beat Boston College and the women’s team topped Providence College) and volleyball (the team beat the University of North Carolina, Wilmington). Overall, a celebratory mood prevailed over the weekend, beginning on Friday night with the comedy of Jon Stewart, host of the Daily Show, and continuing Saturday and Sunday with the annual Homecoming Carnival and Parade, Husky FanFest, Head of the Charles, alumni events, and the first annual arts festival. State of the University Town Hall Meeting
President Aoun delivered his annual State of the University address to an audience of more than 300 faculty, students, and staff at a town hall meeting held in Curry Ballroom. President Aoun’s remarks centered on the challenges and opportunities the current world financial crisis affords the university in the coming months. He cited curricular and management innovation, as well as setting research and academic priorities as broad areas of opportunity and change for the university. Conference Asks: Do Institutions Matter?
President Aoun gave welcome remarks at a luncheon during the Conference on International Entrepreneurship and Institutional Theory, cosponsored by Northeastern University, Texas Christian University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The topic of the conference, which attracted scholars from universities around the world, was the role institutions play in entrepreneurship in the international arena. Tribute to Keven Fitzgerald
President Aoun delivers remarks at a tribute to the life and legacy of Kevin Fitzgerald, a beloved and longtime public servant in the Boston community. The event was held to honor Fitzgerald and to officially dedicate the Urban Youth Sports program he cofounded at Northeastern in his name. The program, now called the Kevin W. Fitzgerald Urban Youth Sports Program—or Fitz Youth Sports, will continue to be housed at Northeastern University and includes the several initiatives that help foster physical activity, healthier lifestyles, and confidence among the young people in our communities. The event raised more than $750,000 for the Kevin W. Fitzgerald Fund, which provides resources to sustain and expand Fitz Urban Youth Sports. Photos by Bill Brett

President Aoun hosts an open-forum conversation with members of the Student Government Association and leaders from a variety of student organizations. Approximately 50 students attended. He summed up Northeastern’s commitment to making the Northeastern experience all it can be for students, citing advancements made in greening the campus, expanding experiential education, and increasing our global reach. He also thanked the SGA for its leadership and engagement in setting a common set of priorities, encouraging them to continue this productive path. Dinner honoring Chairman Emeritus Neal Finnegan
President Aoun hosts a dinner in honor of Chairman Emeritus Neal Finnegan, ’61, Hon. ’98, following a reception and dedication ceremony. The dinner was attended by Finnegan’s Board and University colleagues, friends, and family members. Vice Chairman of the Board Jean Tempel gave remarks, as did Finnegan Scholar Sylvia Warot, ’08, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, and Chairman Sternberg, ’68 . Finnegan was presented with a Northeastern sailor’s hat as a token of appreciation for steering the Northeastern “ship†with such a steady and fearless hand. Dedication of Finnegan Plaza
President Aoun announces the dedication of the Veterans Memorial space in honor of Chairman Emeritus Neal Finnegan’s service. The area surrounding the memorial, literally at a crossroads of what is both old and new at Northeastern, will be known as Neal F. Finnegan Plaza. The plaza is marked by a stone bearing its name, which was unveiled by President Aoun, Chairman Sternberg, and Chairman Emeritus Finnegan, ’61, Hon. ’98. President Aoun hosts a reception prior to a dedication ceremony and dinner honoring Chairman Emeritus Neal Finnegan, ’61, Hon. ’98. Finnegan served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2008. He joined the Board in 1988. Under his leadership, Northeastern dramatically increased its retention rates, raised its academic profile, built a residential campus, and strengthened its faculty body. President’s Convocation for the 111th entering class
President Aoun welcomed students in the 111th entering class at the annual President’s Convocation ceremony. Northeastern University doesn’t want to train students for their first career, their second or even their third, President Joseph Aoun told the incoming freshmen class. “Our goal is to get you ready for life,†he said. Provost Stephen Director served as master of ceremonies. Barbecue celebrating opening day of circus
President Aoun attends a barbecue celebrating the opening day of the Atlanta-based Universoul Circus, which ran through Sunday of the holiday weekend. More than 300 community members stopped by Centennial Quad for hotdogs, hamburgers, and other grill favorites before the Universoul Circus tents in Columbus Parking Lot opened to the public at 7 p.m. Throughout the week circus-goers enjoyed acts that included the usual tigers, elephants, clowns, and trapeze artists, as well as more urban acts like break dancers, motorcycle daredevils, and hip-hop performers. President Aoun attends a celebration honoring this year’s graduates of the Mayor’s Youth Council. The program provides Boston's young people with an active role in addressing youth issues. President Aoun welcomes the U.S. Senate's Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions to Northeastern, where Senator Kennedy presided over a field hearing to discuss how to ensure access to college in a turbulent economy. The field hearing coincided with Northeastern's announcement earlier in the day that it will move to a direct lending program beginning this fall. This significant move will allow students and families to access Federal low-cost educational loans.

Alumni Gather to Watch Husky Baseball Squares Off Against the Boston Red Sox
Nearly 700 alumni and friends attended the event at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Florida which was hosted by the Naples Alumni Chapter. Alumni and friends from 17 states--including some from as far away as Wisconsin and California-- helped account for the largest turnout in the history of the event. Participants enjoyed a barbecue luncheon at the park, and event emcee Jack Moynihan, MPA'93, Vice President of Alumni Relations and the Northeastern Fund, kept things going as the crowd heard remarks from Northeastern President Joseph E.
