President Aoun welcomes the University to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., convocation
The University gathered in Blackman Auditorium in celebration and remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Organized by the John D. O’Bryant African-American Institute, the convocation featured readings from Dr. King’s works, music by the Unity Gospel Ensemble and Marchelle Jacques-Yarde, and moving words by keynote speaker Reverend Dr. Zan Wesley Holmes. Tribute to Henry Nasella and Ed Galante
Northeastern honored Henry Nasella, UC'77, and Edward Galante, E'73, for a pair of $5 million pledges to Northeastern. Nasella and his wife, Michele, established the Nasella Family Endowment Fund in support of financial aid. Their generosity will infuse much needed funding into undergraduate financial aid, a top priority of the University. Ed and Cathie Galante have committed $5 million to fund the Galante Engineering and MBA Program, a six-year program leading to a joint bachelor-of-science-in-engineering and MBA degree. Melody for Dialogue Among Civilizations Association hosted its world premiere concert,
"Melody for Peace: Rossini, but not only…" on December 2, 2007. The goal was to promote peace
through the universal language of music performed by artists from around the world. The event
featured an original composition by Anthony Paul De Ritis, chair of Northeastern's department

President Aoun is the keynote speaker at America's Table breakfast.
Sponsored by the American Jewish Committee, America's Table is a feast celebrating
the diversity of cultures in America. Northeastern University sponsored the event on
November 16, 2007. Present at the event, among others, were Zanaib Al-Suwaij, founder
of the American Islamic Congress; Norman Mineta, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation;
Henri Parens, Holocaust survivor; Sanjay Puri, founder and chair of the U.S. India Political

President Aoun speaks at the New Bostonians celebration
On November 19, President Aoun spoke at the We Are Boston awards ceremony
hosted by Mayor Thomas Menino. The event, which celebrates the immigrant
community in Boston, honored Red Sox star David "Big Papi" Ortiz, as well
as the outstanding accomplishments of other individuals and organizations that
have made significant contributions in embracing Boston's diversity.

Reception celebrating the young artists from Artists for Humanity
On November 15, President Aoun hosted a reception honoring the students from
Artists for Humanity whose work now adorns banners along Columbus Avenue. It marked
the coming together of a program sponsored by Northeastern that began during the
President's inauguration celebration in March. Copies of the banners, which portray
aspects of university life, were presented to the artists after the reception.

President Aoun welcomes Senator Kennedy and families of U.S. soldiers
On Friday, November 9, President Aoun welcomed Senator Edward Kennedy and
the families of eight soldiers from New England who have been killed in Iraq and
Afghanistan. They were on campus for a private premiere screening of the
documentary "Remember Us," which shows the difficulties the families face after
all of the activity surrounding their family member's death winds down. The

President Aoun visits the Visual Art + Design faculty exhibit
The President stopped by to view the annual faculty art exhibition
(November 8-30). The exhibit recognizes the artistic and academic excellence
of Northeastern University's celebrated Studio Art + Design faculty and shows
works in painting, photography, print, graphic design, installation, sculpture,

President Aoun gave welcome remarks before turning over the podium to
General John Abizaid, Former Commander of the United States Central Command.
The General spoke on Tuesday, October 30, about the conflict in the Middle East
in a lecture presented by the Office of the President in conjunction with

Frank Palmer Speare Society Annual Luncheon
The university held its annual Frank Palmer Speare Society luncheon, designed to thank and honor those alumni and friends who have included Northeastern in an estate provision or other planned gift. The rain didn't keep Huskies away for Homecoming 2007. We inaugurated a
new Mayor of Huntington Avenue, crowned the Homecoming King and Queen,
celebrated at the Carnival, and cheered on the football team against the

President Aoun hosts the 2007 faculty and staff Welcome Barbecue
The weather was perfect for this year's Welcome Barbecue at
the Warren Center on September 23. Faculty and staff and their families
joined together to kick off the new academic year. The day was filled
with great food, fun activities for the children, and lots of laughs.

President Aoun hosts a delegation from Singapore
On October 18, Northeastern hosted a delegation from Singapore
headed by the Minister of Education, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and the
Minister of State for Education, Lui Tuck Yew. This delegation is visiting
a number of higher-education institutions as part of an initiative to create
new universities in Singapore. Northeastern was chosen because of its
distinctive experiential learning programs among other reasons.

Reception honoring Northeastern Trustee Emeritus Denis Picard
President Aoun attends a reception honoring Northeastern Trustee
Emeritus Denis Picard on September 27 in the Raytheon Amphitheater.
Picard is the former CEO and chairman of defense and aerospace systems supplier Raytheon.
In Picard's honor and at his request, Raytheon has endowed the Denis Picard
Trustee Professorship in electrical and computer engineering, now held by Mario Sznaier.

The Second Annual Northeastern Snow Ball
The president joins the second annual Northeastern Snow Ball at the Grand Ballroom of the Boston Marriott Copley Plaza on Jan. 27. The event was sponsored by the Resident Student Association and the Student Ambassadors, and paid for in part by the student activities fee.
