To the Northeastern Community:

In recent communications, I wrote about my abhorrence of racism and discrimination in all its forms. There has been significant dialogue by the University community regarding these topics. Resolutions expressing strong sentiments against racism and discrimination have been advanced by the Faculty Senate and the Student Senate.

We must seize the momentum created by this dialogue and the heightened awareness of our Northeastern community to learn more how to foster our rich diversity and how to be on guard against any type of racism or discrimination. In order to realize such teaching moments and learning outcomes, a University-wide committee will be established to look into ways of building on our commitment to enrich diversity and combat discrimination.

This committee will be appointed in consultation with the leadership of the Faculty Senate and the SGA. The committee will be provided with $20,000 to support activities that can indeed provide teaching moments for members of the Northeastern community. I am confident that we all can learn from each other ways to re-affirm our commitment to diversity and our opposition to discrimination of any type. The Committee will be also charged with preparing a summary report to be provided to the University leadership.
