Diversity Week 2012

This week is Diversity Week 2012!

MAPS, in collaboration with students from the NU Physical Therapy Program, is hosting a program entitled, “Working in the Culture of Homelessness.” The purpose of the program is to educate students about the problem of homelessness and help us to understand its social, political, and ecological implications.

It will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 325 Behrakis from 9:30am – 11:00am in place of our regularly scheduled meeting.

Student National Medical Association Meeting in Boston

Welcome back to the Fall semester whether you are on coop, classes or abroad! There is an exciting event that the Student National Medical Association is putting on right here in Boston at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Hospital. This is our quarterly National Leadership Institute (NLI) taking place from September 14th-16th. The event requires only a $3.70 service fee.

There will be many opportunities at this event to interact with Harvard Medical School physicians, medical students, and pre-medical students from around the country.

Additionally, on Sunday September 16th from 9am-2pm there is a MAPS Leadership Retreat taking place at Northeastern University hosted by NU-MAPS as part of the NLI conference.

UMASS Special Outreach Program Presentation

The Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a tuition-free, four-week, residential program for current undergraduate sophomores and juniors interested in entering careers in the biomedical research, biotechnology and the health professions (BBHP). Sessions include the professional school application process with emphasis on medical school admissions and financing professional school. NU Faculty Presentation: In the Kingdom of the Sick

In recent years, there has been an alarming rise in illnesses that defy diagnosis or have no known cure. Millions of people, especially women, with illnesses such as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic pain, and chronic fatigue syndrome face skepticism from physicians and the public alike.

Through research and patient narratives, health writer Lauri Edwards explores patient rights, the role of social media in medical advocacy, the origins of our attitudes about chronic illness, and more.

Wildlife Medicine Symposium – Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine

The Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine’s “Wildlife Aquatics Zoo and Exotic Animal Medicine Club” (WAZE) invites NU students to attend the annual Spring Symposium.  While the event is geared mostly toward veterinary students, the experts will be speaking on topics that will be accessible and fascinating to anyone interested in veterinary medicine and/or conservation issues!

The Symposium will take place at Tufts Veterinary Campus in North Grafton, MA on Saturday, April 27th 2013.

This year’s topic is “Human Impacts of Wildlife and Exotics: The Good, the Bad and the Unknown.”  Our human footprint on this planet is huge.  Through lectures and wetlabs, this year’s Symposium will explore many different types of impacts that humans have on wildlife, aquatic, and exotic species.  The Symposium will also emphasize the role that veterinary medicine can play in improving conservation and welfare efforts.   Topics Include: Read more…
