Frequently Asked Admission Questions
Who should I contact regarding concerns related to my application to one of your graduate programs?
All questions related to your application for admission should be directed to our Graduate School, northeastern.edu/cssh/graduate/admissions. They can answer questions regarding missing documentation, deadlines, and admission decisions.
I am applying to the PhD program but, if not admitted, would also be interested in pursuing an MA degree. Do I need to complete two applications?
No, students who apply to the PhD program who do not have prior relevant Master’s degrees will automatically be considered for admission to the MA program if they are not admitted to the PhD program.
As a current student in the MA or MPA program interested in applying to the PhD program, do I need to follow a special application procedure to apply for the PhD?
Yes, students currently in the MA or MPA programs at Northeastern also must formally apply for admission to the doctoral program. Admission is not guaranteed. Applicants seeking admission to the doctoral program who are currently enrolled in one of our Master’s programs must start the process by submitting the following:
Are there cut-offs for GRE scores?
The program does not set a formal minimum requirement for the GRE, but it must be noted that applicants scoring below the 50th percentile will be at a competitive disadvantage. We would however not dissuade anyone from applying based on GRE scores alone.
Are there minimum requirements for Undergraduate GPAs?
It is expected that applicants to the doctoral program will have earned a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.5 out of 4.0, or its equivalent. Master’s level applicants should have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher or its equivalent. We will review any applicant to one of our programs, but it is rare for us to admit anyone who does not meet the above criteria.
How will I know if all my materials have been received?
How much does graduate credit cost at Northeastern University?
Tuition costs can be found at the Student Financial Services website.
How many students are admitted to your graduate programs each year?
We typically admit only 4 to 6 students into our PhD program each fall. For our MA in Political Science we are looking to recruit a class of 20-30 students every fall semester and possibly a few students in the spring semester.
When can I expect to receive an answer regarding my completed application?
PhD application decisions are typically made in early February. In cases in which a decision cannot be made by this time, the Department will be in contact with you.
We begin making decisions on MA applicants for the fall semester in February – March. Decisions continue on a rolling basis through the August 1, application deadline. It typically takes 4-5 weeks from the completion of your application for a decision to be made.
