KIM Students, especially non-economic majors, in Economic Principles courses constantly complain about the irrelevancy of the principles to real-world situations. Consequently, students regard the principles simply as abstract pedagogical tools without realistic applications. This perception does not motivate the students to apply maximum effort to the course, and they simply take it as a necessary requirement for graduation. To convince
students that the principles are refinements of real economic realities,
I collected about one hundred actual economic examples from various weekly
magazines and rewrote them in the simplest format without any technical
jargon, yet associating the examples with relevant principles for their
associations. These examples can now be accessed by any students on our
department website. Surveys of students reveal a very strong satisfaction
on the usefulness and interest of the website. |
