Justin Dowd: Astronaut Training in a Military Jet
January 25, 2013
Last year, undergraduate Justin Dowd won the Metro’s global competition to travel into space.
The following is footage of astronaut training in a military jet. This mission simulates phases and forces of spaceflight including; near vertical angle of ascent, intervals of weightlessness, and deceleration up to 5 times gravity simulating reentry. A small aircraft and 180 degree view provided a pure sensation of flight like flying a broomstick. The mission takes place in the Northern Netherlands through private company Space Expedition Corporation. The first private commercial spaceflight will begin in 2014 aboard the two seat Lynx II shuttle.
