The ATLAS and CMS experiments have reported the discovery of a particle with mass 126 GeV as a result of searches for the standard model Higgs boson. In this talk I will discuss the importance of a Higgs discovery to the field of high energy physics. I will describe the measurements from the ATLAS experiments and the next steps, both in terms of accessing additional decay modes and determining the properties of this particle, which will allow us to confirm (or contradict) the particle’s identity as the standard model Higgs boson.
