Supplied by a wide range of high-throughput tools and technologies, a wealth of data are fueling rapid advances in a number of research fields, from cell biology to computer science to economics. Nowhere are these advances more apparent than in the study ofsocial systems. In this talk, I will discuss recent results based on three examples of Big Data, ranging from phone calls and daily trajectories of a few million individuals to email communications within a large technology firm operating in more than 70 countries to datasets that document scientific achievement and impact for over 100 years. Through these examples, I hope to illustrate the opportunities and promises offered by Big Data, with particular emphasis on the role statistical physics plays in this truly interdisciplinary field.
