From Designed Molecules to Functional Biomaterials and Applications

Development of novel materials, from inorganic nanoparticles to a variety of supramolecular structures, offers new opportunities for biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, drug delivery, and biosensors. The major focus of this proposal is to develop new strategies for creating novel functional biomaterials with adaptive surface chemistry for tissue regeneration and drug and gene delivery. For every project we will combine theoretical and experimental efforts. Theoretical approaches, through analytical models and multi-scale simulations, will be used to develop models necessary for the rational design of molecules and materials with desired properties and functionality. Parallel experimental efforts will involve bottom-up self-assembly fabrication and testing of these materials.
