Diphotons with the CMS Detector: A Probe for Discovery at the LHC

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment is a general purpose particle detector experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN.  Instrumented with a high-precision, high-granularity electromagnetic crystal calorimeter, CMS is well equipped for searches with photon final states, including the search for the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel.  I will describe searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model in the diphoton final state, including extra dimensions and supersymmetry, also highlighting the strengths of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter.
