Departmental Newsletter Fall 2011
Department Chair's MessageOn behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, I am very pleased to invite you to our inaugural issue of Pharmaceutical Sciences E-Newsletter. We anticipate publishing two issues of the newsletter each academic year (Fall and Spring) to keep the alumni and friends of the department up-to-date on the different activities and accomplishments.
The academic year 2010-2011 has been extremely productive for the faculty and staff. The Department recruited two exceptionally talented faculty members who started in Fall 2010. Dr. Heather Clark joined as an Associate Professor and Dr. Ganesh Thakur joined as an Assistant Professor. Both Heather and Ganesh are off to a wonderful year with significant productivity in research and teaching in the graduate as well as the professional pharmacy program. We also recruited Ms. Sarom Lay as the new Graduate Program Administrator in the Department.
As you will read in the newsletter, we have been very successful in attaining major extramural grants, including the National Cancer Institute’s Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence (CCNE) grant of $13.5 million over 5 years to Professor Vladimir Torchilin. Other faculty members, including Professors Alex Makriyannis, Michail Sitkovsky, Barbara Waszczak, Richard Deth, John Gatley, Roger Giese, and I have all received significant extramural funding. Our post-doctoral associates and graduate students have also done extremely well at national and international levels winning multiple awards, publishing high impact papers, and presenting at conferences all over the world.
In 2011, with the decision by former Dean Steven Zoloth to step down and join the Provost Office, we were very fortunate to recruit an outstanding leader, Dr. Terry Fulmer, who joined us as the Dean of Bouve College effective from October 1st.
Lastly, on behalf of all of us in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Northeastern University, we wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Holiday Season filled with great joy and a highly prosperous and peaceful 2012. Please keep in touch!
Sincerely,
Mansoor M. Amiji, PhD, RPh
Distinguished Professor and Chairman
