The cost of a round trip ticket from Boston to your host country is inlcuded in your program fee. Travel information, instructions, and policies will be given during orientation along with a deadline for making changes and/or cancellations. Whether or not you plan to fly with the group, review the rules and complete the on-line form/paper form provided by Academic Studies Abroad or Advantage Travel by the appropriate deadline.
You have the option of refusing NU flight arrangements and organizing your own travel. The cost of the group flight ticket will be deducted from your program fee. Some countries offer discount train, bus, or airplane travel passes, which will help you travel around a country or region cheaply. Some examples are Eurail (Europe), BritRail (Great Britain), and Boomerang (Australia). While they are not necessarily cheap, they can be a good bargain if you plan to travel frequently and cover great distances. The big catch is you can only buy these passes in the US.
These are great resources to have on your trip. Many books give brief but essential summaries of local customs and culture, including what is considered taboo and acceptable behavior. The better guides also provide maps; suggest accommodations; list costs of services, foods, museums, etc.; and recommend good tourist sites, both on and off the beaten track. You can purchase Berkeley's Fodor, Let's Go, or The Lonely Planet travel guides at Council Travel and most local bookstores.
Check out the Internet for all sorts of information. Look for your host country's exchange rates, local newspapers, weather reports and tourist information. You might even be able to read about your host university on the web! Use the links on the bottom of each program fact sheet.
