Description

These programs are for students at the intermediate and advanced Spanish language levels. Students may choose to study on one of four study abroad programs at the University of Seville. All courses are taught in Spanish.

Language & Society

Language and Society Improve your language skills and take classes in Spanish language, literature, history, art, civilization, culture, and film. The goal of the program is to solidify the student's Spanish language skills while providing an understanding of Spanish culture through its art, literature, history, and politics. This is achieved through intensive language and content coursework. All courses are taught in Spanish and complimented with excursions and volunteer opportunities.

Liberal Arts

Improve your Spanish language skills and choose from a variety of classes while immersed in the enchanting sevillano culture. The goal of the program is to help students improve their written Spanish while allowing them to pursue coursework in a wide variety of fields. These goals are achieved through the academic program, the homestay, excursions and cultural activities, conversation exchanges, and volunteer opportunities.

Advanced Liberal Arts

Improve your advanced Spanish language skills and immerse yourself in Spanish academic culture. The goals of the program are to enable students to achieve fluency in spoken and written Spanish and to pursue a wide variety of academic fields, gaining a deeper understanding of these fields from a Spanish perspective. These goals are reached through direct matriculation in university courses, the homestay program, local and overnight excursions, a conversational exchange program, volunteer opportunities, and independent study options.

Teaching Development Program

Gain hands-on teaching experience and explore the fascinating region of Andalusia. The goals of the program are to help students improve their spoken and written Spanish while allowing them to develop specific expertise in international education and second language acquisition. These goals are achieved through the academic program, the teaching development course, the homestay, excursions and cultural activities, conversation exchanges, and volunteer opportunities.

Business & Society

(This Program is Not Available to Business Majors)

If you want to learn more about business in Spain and the European Union, the CIEE Business & Society Program at the Universidad de Sevilla is for you. The program offers a core of business and economics courses as well as electives in the humanities. If your Spanish is excellent, you are also encouraged to take courses alongside Spanish students working on degrees in Business Administration.

International Business & Culture

This program is designed for students who have 0-4 semesters of previous Spanish language study and a strong interest in business and economics. Students who are motivated to develop their Spanish language skills and learn about Spain and Europe through living in the traditional Spanish city of Sevilla will find that this program provides an ideal opportunity.

Courses

Courses taken abroad may satisfy college and departmental core requirements. Students should consult with their advisor to discuss the specific requirements that may be satisfied abroad.

Destination

Seville, the capital of Andalucia, is a picturesque, energetic city with antique white-washed buildings, lush gardens, and world-famous landmarks like the Alcazar and Plaza de Toros (the bullfighting ring). Visitors immerse themselves in its unique and historic culture; experience its flamenco clubs, theaters and discos; and dine in its outdoor cafes and restaurants. Seville is located in the south-central part of Spain and was once the home of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. It was also the returning point for the "new world" voyage of Christopher Columbus. This romantic city has been the home of Don Juan and the birthplace of the great painters Velasquez and Murillo.

Host University

The University of Seville, established in the 18th century, has been one of Spain's leading institutions of higher learning. Its faculties of Philology, Geography, History, Philosophy, Law, Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Engineering serve the educational needs of Spain's most populous region. Located in the center of Seville, the University's main building is bordered by the Maria Luisa Park and Guadalquivir River, giving an appearance of being in a residential neighborhood. The University hosts over 80,000 students.

Accommodation

Students live in Spanish speaking private homes or in student dormitories depending on the program. Meals are inlcuded.

Eligibility Requirements

Full-time Northeastern student, 2.75 GPA, 3.0 GPA Advanced Liberal Arts, and middler (third) year or above.

Cost

$21,400 per Semester for the 2009/2010 academic year. Includes: tuition, housing, meals, orientation, and round-trip airfare via Boston.
