Location

Lima’s colonial legacy is reflected in the location of its Main Square (Plaza de Armas) on the banks of the city’s major river; in its numerous ornately constructed baroque churches; and in its historical homes with elaborately carved wooden balconies. Lima is a city with eight million inhabitants and neighborhoods sprawling out from the colonial center, peppered with Incan and pre-Incan archeological sites. One need only to listen to Peruvian music, eat Peruvian food, and learn about its fascinating history and culture to observe the blending of indigenous, African, Spanish, European, and Asian cultures.

University

The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), founded in 1917, is the oldest established private higher educational institution in Peru. The impressive 90-acre campus houses faculty buildings, the central library, computer facilities, the sports center, student cafeterias, and even an archaeological dig site. Nearly 17,000 students study at the PUCP. The University has many research centers, including the Institute for Democracy and Humans Rights. The campus is located in the district of San Miguel, a busy area with enormous commercial activity.

Housing

Students live in private Peruvian homes. Housing, three meals per day, and laundry costs are included in the program fee. The homestay is essential to the student’s learning process and integration into life in Lima. The opportunity to live with a Peruvian family not only allows students to deconstruct stereotypes and to observe real life in action, but also creates opportunities for dialogue about issues viewed in the courses and Spanish language practice. The opportunity to live with a family offers students a unique source of cultural learning and personal growth.

Liberal Arts

Academic year students, on the July–July program, are responsible for housing and meals during the break between semesters, which is two and a half months. Calendar year students, on the February to December program, may remain with the host family at no additional cost.
