Students will also have access to all campus resources, including e-mail, campus activities, library facilities, and sports clubs.
Students may choose from the University of Canterbury's entire course catalog.
Courses taken abroad may satisfy college and departmental core requirements. Students should consult with their advisor to discuss the specific requirements that may be satisfied abroad.
The city of Christchurch, located in the south island of the continent, has a population of 300,000 people. The south island is distinctly majestic and offers adventurous students the experience of a life time. Just a short trip from campus, students will find breathtaking snow capped mountains, parks, rivers, beaches, waterfalls, valleys, and lakes. The city, underneath its English facade of stone buildings, offers students many cosmopolitan attractions such as the theater, restaurants, cafes, shopping, pubs, and sporting events. The University of Canterbury is only a 15 minute bus ride to the center of town.
Canterbury College, as the University was originally known, was established in 1873 and became the second university institution in New Zealand. The intervening years have seen it expand from a small liberal arts college to a modern autonomous university occupying a purpose built site in Ilam, 7km away. The University is physically situated between established suburbs and comparatively modern suburbs, with 2 bus routes connecting it to the city center.
Canterbury's campus housing is more than lodging. In a "Hall of Residence", you become part of a community that has many of its own social and sporting activities. Students live in Ilam Village, "suite" style housing with a fully equipped kitchen, laundry, and bathroom. This style accommodation is self-catering, meals are not included.

"After returning home and recovering from jet lag, I was able to look back and reflect on my trip. However, even after being home for over a month, I continue to reflect. It takes time to realize that it is actually over and to truly begin to see how I have changed and grown. Although many students return home to feelings of discomfort, and I have certainly had those phases, overall I look back on my experience with fond memories and am grateful for how much I have seen and learned. I didn’t only learn about New Zealand culture and nature, but I learned about the world and mostly about myself. And that is something that I can never lose."
Carrie Stultz, Spring 2006
