Location

São Paulo is a multi-cultural city of more than 17 million people. It is the second largest urban area in the Americas and an important South American economic and cultural center. São Paulo has a modern subway system, shopping malls, beautiful parks, nightlife, and open air fruit and flower markets. São Paulo is often compared to New York City because of its distinct ethnic neighborhoods and excellent cultural venues. The city offers numerous entertainment opportunities including theater, plays, cinema, museums, and Carnival samba schools.

Liberal Arts

This program is targeted to students with at least four semesters of college-level Spanish and/or two semesters of Portuguese who want to improve their Portuguese language skills and knowledge of contemporary Brazil while at the same time being able to matriculate in a broad range of course offerings in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Participants should be interested in living in a large, cosmopolitan South American city.

Courses

All students take two required courses during the four-week ILCP; intensive Portuguese language and Contemporary Brazil. During the remainder of the semester, students take the two required CIEE courses, Brazilian Issues and Realities and Portuguese Language, and two or three direct enrollment courses at PUC and FAAP.

University

The Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) was founded in 1947 and enrolls 7,100 undergraduates and 3,600 graduate students. FAAP has departments in architecture, cinema, fine arts, and urban planning.

The Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC) is ranked among the top universities in Brazil and has 19,000 undergraduates. PUC maintains a strong research tradition, a unique characteristic among private institutions of higher learning in Brazil. The PUC campus is located in a residential area near downtown São Paulo’s famous Avenida Paulista with good transportation access. The University neighborhood provides numerous facilities for students such as gyms, bookstores, and cafés. The CIEE office is located two blocks from the PUC campus.

Business and Culture

(This Program is Not Available to Business Majors; Students on this program may not take any business courses)

The CIEE Business and Culture program in São Paulo is designed for students with a background in business [college-level coursework in college-level micro- or macro-economics, accounting, finance, management, marketing, or statistics] and an interest in learning Portuguese. Students focus on issues relating to business in Brazil and Latin America, while improving their Portuguese or learning it for the first time.

Courses

All students take a CIEE Portuguese language course for the duration of the semester. In addition, during Module I students are required to take two required courses, Brazilian Economy and Politics and Culture in Brazil, and one elective course. In Module II, students select three electives. Students take a total of seven courses during the semester. Students may take one or two additional FGV courses.

University

The Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo da Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) was founded in 1954 through a joint effort of the Brazilian government and the Brazilian business community, with cooperation from Michigan State University, to meet the needs and demands for business education in Brazil. FGV has worldwide recognition as a highly reputable private college focused on business administration and economics. FGV is a private non-profit business school that has more than 70 international partner schools and an international student body.

Housing

Housing and two meals per day are included in the program fee. One meal per day, usually lunch or dinner depending on class schedules, is not included in the fee and is the responsibility of the student. During orientation, students are housed together. During the remainder of the semester, students are placed in Brazilian homestays. For academic year students, housing during the two month break is not included in the CIEE fee and is the responsibility of the student.

Eligibility Requirements

Full-time Northeastern student, 2.75 GPA, and middler (third) year or above.

Cost

$21,400 per Semester for the 2009/2010 academic year. Includes: tuition, housing, meals, orientation, and round-trip airfare via Boston.
