Description

General Studies Program

This is the most common program chosen by the majority of students. It is a standard semester program where students are required to take an Italian language course as part of their curriculum, and may then choose any Umbra courses offered without restriction, other than any course prerequisites. Honors courses may be taken by students who qualify. This program is open to all students.

Independent Research Program

This program is designed for students who wish to work on a thesis or senior project while studying abroad in Italy. Students are required to take an Italian language course, a Research Methods course, and Field-Study Research course. This program course consists of regular on-on-one consultations with a pre-assigned Umbra instructor who assists and guides the student through their thesis. Students may also choose to work with instructors from their home institution if approved. Students may also choose one or two additional courses. Honors courses may be taken by students who qualify. This program is open to all students.

Program Site

Located in the heartland of Italy and the provincial capital of Umbria, Perugia is a city rich in art, architecture, and historical significance. The city's Etruscan walls, medieval churches, renaissance and baroque palaces still bear witness to its past splendor. It is also a place of learning with two distinguished universities and many academies of art and music. Perugia is a charming, inviting and friendly Italian city that offers students and travelers a great mix of old and new Italian treasures.

Host University

The Umbra Institute is located in the heart of Perugia, along the famous Via dei Priori, in the Palazzo Degli Oddi-literally, a palace owned by the descendants of the noble Italian Degli Oddi family. The Palazzo is an architecturally-rich medieval structure. Magnificent neoclassical paintings, frescoed ceilings and walls dating from the 15th to 18th centuries, a restored 13th century room which is part of the Institute, and a portion of an Etruscan boundary wall from the 4th century BC are all incorporated into this spectacular building. The top floor windows of the Institute's classrooms look onto a beautiful Italian courtyard and garden. The Umbra Institute has developed a special affiliation with the Universita per Stranieri di Perugia, which provides Italian language instruction to Institute students. Palazzo Gallenga, the main site of the Universite was for many years the residence of the Antinori, a noble family who commissioned the building in 1740. Today the Universite is home to hundreds of students from around the world. The 18th and 19th century frescoes and paintings, stained glass windows, and impressive marble archways create a truly wonderful learning environment. A library with holdings in Italian and English, a study center, and a small cafeteria are open to students throughout the day.
