Description

The program is designed for students with a desire to understand the complexities and paradoxes of the world's largest democracy. Students have the opportunity to explore India's cultural and religious diversity while experiencing the impact of modernity upon tradition. This program is also ideal for a student who would like to do a service project, participate in volunteer work or undertake an internship.

Courses

A mandatory course load for one semester is 4 courses. Students are required to take Conversational or Basic Hindi (Hindi I) and three additional courses either through the Study in India Program (SIP) or by drectly matriculating in regular university courses. CIEE strongly encourages each student to directly enroll in at least two courses at the University with local Indian students to ensure they benefit from this unique cross-cultural opportunity.

Location

Hyderabad is the fifth largest city in India and is at the heart of India’s rapidly developing global economy. The newly coined “Cyberabad” area, the IT-outsourcing hub that contains the famous “Hitech City”, has brought much attention to Hyderabad in recent years. Good public transportation makes Hyderabad an excellent base from which to visit other areas of the country. The language of the state is Telugu, but in Hyderabad, Urdu is widely spoken, and people are comfortable with Hindi. English is also spoken by large numbers of college-educated people.

University

The University of Hyderabad, over twenty-five years old, was the first federally funded university to be established in the southern part of India. The University has over 200 faculty and 2,100 full-time students and eight schools: chemistry; life sciences; mathematics and computer and information sciences; physics; humanities; social sciences; management studies; performing arts, fine arts, and communication. The campus is located approximately 30-45 minutes from the downtown area by public transportation affording students a more tranquil environment outside of the city center to learn about student life in Andhra Pradesh.

Housing

At the CIEE Study Center in Hyderabad, students have the choice of three housing options: guest house, dorm or homestay. Meals are included in all housing options. Although every attempt is made to grant each student’s preferences, roommate and housing assignments are based upon availability and other factors. Therefore, your housing preference cannot be guaranteed. Once the housing has been allotted for the semester, students may not change to another housing option.
