Description

This program offers students an opportunity to experience and study Egyptian and Middle Eastern history, culture, and contemporary issues in one of the most important cities in the region. Courses, taught in English, are available in most Arts & Sciences majors.

Courses

Students may choose from The American University of Cairo's entire course catalog. However, it is recommended that students take courses that have a Middle Eastern focus. Courses are taught in English. Courses taken abroad may satisfy college and departmental core requirements. Students should consult with their advisor to discuss the specific requirements that may be satisfied abroad.

Language Courses

A course in "survival Arabic" is required prior to the start of regular classes. Students are also urged to take advantage of more advanced classes. Language skills greatly enhance the total educational experience.

Destination

Located at the ancient crossroads between Africa, Europe, and Asia. Cairo is the cultural capital of the Arabic-speaking world. Its monuments and museums attest to 5,000 years of civilization. East of the Nile lays modern Cairo where 2,000 years of Islamic and Coptic culture still thrive. West of the Nile is home to the Ancient Egyptian city of Memphis (Giza) where the Pyramids and Sphinx still stand.

Host University

The American University in Cairo is located in the heart of the city, two blocks from the River Nile and near the Egyptian Museum, government buildings, major hotels, and embassies. The American University in Cairo, founded in 1919, is independent from all other universities. There are about 4,300 undergraduate and graduate students and about 38,000 students enrolled in non-credit courses. The University hosts students from over 25 countries, representing 68 nationalities. Classes are held from Sunday to Thursday.

Accommodation

Students live in a residence hall with other University students. Student will share a fully funished double bedroom. Bed linens will be provided by AUC. Bathrooms are located on each floor and shared with other students. The residence hall is segregated by gender. Meals are not included.

Eligibility Requirements

Full-time Northeastern student, 2.5 GPA, and middler (third) year or above.

Cost

$20,400 per Semester for the 2008/2009 academic year.Includes: tuition, housing, orientation, and round trip airfare via Boston. Meals are not included.
