Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, is located on the southern coast of the island. It has a population of two million and is considered to be the main economic and political center of the country. The city, often called the “First City of the New World,” is steeped in historical significance. There are numerous plazas and churches throughout the colonial district, which give a distinct flavor to the city. The city is divided by a river, the Río Ozama, and is close to many beaches.
The CIEE Study Center, established in 1998, gives students the opportunity to enroll in classes at El Bonó and INTEC. In addition, FLACSO offers several special courses for CIEE students, focused upon cultural, literary, artistic, political, and social aspects of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean as a whole. This arrangement permits students to combine the specialized, more personalized “think tank” atmosphere of FLACSO with courses offered through INTEC and El Bonó.
The program is suitable for advanced undergraduate students with strong language skills and a background in the social sciences or Latin American studies.
Students enroll in a maximum of two FLACSO courses. The remainder of their courses are direct enrollment courses at El Bonó or INTEC.
Courses taken abroad may satisfy college and departmental core requirements. Students should consult with their advisors to discuss the specific requirements that may be satisfied abroad.
The CIEE program is hosted by the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO). FLACSO is linked to other research teaching centers throughout Latin America and was founded by UNESCO, the UN agency dedicated to education, culture, and science. Its internationally known faculty is also associated with one or more universities in Santo Domingo. Through FLACSO, students in the program are eligible to take selected courses from the nationally recognized Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) and the Instituto Filosófico Pedro Francisco Bonó (El Bonó).
The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) is a private university founded by a group of professionals and businessmen in the 1980s to promote academic excellence in the areas of social sciences and engineering.
The Instituto Filosófico Pedro Francisco Bonó (El Bonó) is a Jesuit institute of higher learning specializing in philosophy and social sciences.
Students live in Dominican homestays in middle-class neighborhoods throughout Santo Domingo. Housing and meals are included in the program fee. All students receive three meals per day with their host family. Weekly laundry and linen service are also provided.

"The best experience of my life occurred in the Dominican Republic. I couldn't have chosen a better program to accomplish my goals of: improving my Spanish skills, submersing myself in a new culture, gaining new viewpoints on both my own culture and that of others, and being able to lend a hand and make a difference where it's needed. The opportunities for growth and self-reflection were endless in a place where poverty confronts wealth and beauty meets a cold and hard reality."
Tara Haughney, Fall 2006
