This program is designed for students with no Chinese language background and those who have studied Chinese for several semesters. The program offers Chinese language training at both standard and intensive levels coupled with coursework, taught in English, in global studies, economics, international relations, and area studies.
Standard Academic Curriculum
All students taking the Standard Academic Curriculum are required to take one Mandarin Chinese language course and are assigned to the appropriate level based on the results of written and oral placement exams taken during orientation. In addition, all students are required to take the Chinese Language and Culture Practicum, the Global Studies core course, one Global Studies elective, and one area studies elective.
Accelerated Language Curriculum
All students taking the Accelerated Language Curriculum are required to study two consecutive Mandarin Chinese language courses and are assigned to the appropriate level based on the results of written and oral placement exams taken during orientation. In addition, all students are required to take the Chinese Language and Culture Practicum and the Global Studies core course.
A number of non-credit, optional classes are offered including Chinese martial arts, cooking, calligraphy, chess, music, and Shanghai dialect.
This program is designed for students with 4-7 semesters of Mandarin Chinese to develop advanced communicative skills in Mandarin Chinese through small classes, tutors, and language clinics; understand contemporary economic and political issues affecting China and the affects of China as a rising power in the world today; and apply skills learned in the classroom to understand the environment outside through independent fieldwork and volunteer opportunities.
Students are placed in the appropriate language course based on the results of written and oral placement exams taking during orientation and are also required to take the Advanced Chinese Language Research Project and two electives. Students placed in Advanced High must take both electives in Chinese. Area studies electives enroll students from other CIEE programs in Shanghai.
Known for its economic prowess and long history of foreign influence, Shanghai is the country’s financial and industrial capital. The last decade has seen massive development in this metropolis of 18 million people; construction of the city’s infrastructure and transportation system is constant. With an elevated light rail, the world’s first commercial high-speed maglev train, and five subway lines, the city boasts one of the fastest growing rapid transit systems in the world. Those in search of old Shanghai, however, can still find the legacy of its magnificent past.
Established in 1951, East China Normal University is one of China’s key institutions of higher learning that specializes in teacher education, and is nationally known for its Chinese language and literature program. It enrolls more than 16,000 students and 1,000 international students. The University is located on the bank of the Liwa River northwest of the city. Known as the “Garden University” for its beautiful grounds, students have access to campus facilities including a library, playing fields, recreation center, small shops, and restaurants.
