Courses Offered: CIVE 4566 Sustainable Design of Buildings and Urban Transportation Systems: American and European Perspectives (4 SH), and IAF 4938 Dialogue of Civilizations: Globalization and Social Sciences (4 SH)
Course Description: Principles, practice, and policy for sustainable design of buildings and urban transportation systems, with American and European perspectives. Resource-efficient site planning, building systems, and construction. Current issues and practices, including LEED project certification and knowledge needed to become a LEED Accredited Professional. Transportation planning, bicycle facility design, and policies for promoting walking, bicycling, transit use, and developing sustainable and livable cities. Taught in study-abroad format with site visits showcasing European sustainable design practice.
Students will live in student housing in Delft, a city of 90,000 people between Rotterdam and the Hague, with lectures held at a local university. Course also includes about 10 field trips. The program�s main emphasis is on sustainable urban transportation (bike, walk, public transport), with a secondary emphasis on sustainable buildings. Students will be expected to prepare and give presentations, complete a design project, and to regularly ride bicycles. Students will be expected to participate in pre-trip meetings and field trips, and to perform 8 hours of public service related to sustainable design.
Cost: Summer tuition for 8 NU credits plus additional costs TBD.
Application Process: The program is open to students of any major. The only prerequisite is the ability to do simple quantitative analysis using a spreadsheet. Applicants must submit two copies of the DOC Application, waiver form, and their unofficial transcript to OISP in 10 BV.
