Global Corps Practicum: Poverty, Development and Human Trafficking

Dates: May 17-June 20 (Tentative)

Faculty Leader: Prof. Denise Horn

This five week program will take place in Thailand's northernmost province, Chiang Rai. Chiang Rai is home to the hill tribes of North of Thailand such as the Karen, Akha, Lisu, Meo, and Muser, and a large population of ethnic Chinese. While Thailand is a prosperous country, poverty remains a serious problem among Northern Thais, a key to the forced migration and trafficking of young women, girls and boys for both labor and prostitution.

During this program, students will learn how to address the issues surrounding human trafficking in an intensive peer-to-peer training. Paired with Thai peers, students will work with local NGO leaders and organizers while learning the essentials of grassroots organizing, community development and social entrepreneurship, including microenterprise models.

The majority of the program will be spent in fieldwork and program development in the North, the origination point of many trafficked people. The final portion of the program will include a trip to Thailands south, where the international tourist industry has created the demand for trafficked women and girls. There students will meet with organizations that work with this population and the effects of trafficking.
