Information Session:
Nov. 19, 3-4, location TBA

Dates: June 26-July 31, 2010

Faculty-Leader: Prof. Shakir Mustafa (s.mustafa@neu.edu)

Course Credits: INTL 4939 (4 credits) and ARAB 2900, 3900 (4 credits).

Course Description: Arabic Language: Introduction to and practice of Levantine dialect. Study of connections between dialect and Standard Arabic. Study of connections between Levantine dialect and Egyptian dialect, to which NU students have been introduced.

INTL 4939: The course plans to study elements of Arab culture such as writings by emergent young writers and women writers; the production of documentary and feature films, blogging, and the proliferation of literary and cultural web sites, and to supplement that in-depth study of cultural phenomena with active interaction with Arab intellectuals through meetings with writers, film-makers, web masters, and bloggers.

The idea behind such combination is developing an understanding of Arab culture through extended and multi-faceted inquiry into the contexts of that culture. Texts by Arab women writers, for example, will have an extended life when they are combined with interviews and discussions with these writers. Our students, then, will have opportunities not only to comprehend cultural matters better, but also to watch them as they unfold in the interactions with their makers.

Pre-requisites: ARAB 1101.

Program Cost: Summer tuition for 8 NU credits plus additional costs TBD.

Application Process: Download the dialogue of civilizations application and waiver form. Turn in two copies of each completed form and two copies of your unofficial transcript to the Office of International Study Programs in 10 BV. Potential students will be interviewed by Prof. Mustafa.
