Course description: We will spend the first 4 weeks in Seville in the south of Spain. Seville is the capital of the southern region of Andalusia and is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities of Spain and Europe. The city is an explosion of colors, sensations and contrasts between the modern and the tradition. As cultural, financial and political capital of Andalusia, Seville has evolved into a medium size city where the greatest flamenco artists mix up with the last trends in arts, architecture and theater.

With a population of 75000 inhabitants, Seville is an easy city to get around. All the major historical and culture sites, as well as the student accommodation and the school are within walking distance. The city has a privileged geographical position, only 2 hours thirty minutes by high speed train from Madrid, a bit more than an hour to Portugal and less than three hours to Morocco.

In Sevilla you will be studying at a school that occupies a traditional Sevillian style mansion surrounding a central typical patio. The accommodation will be in Spanish families in single rooms with breakfast and lunch included. You will be taking Spanish lessons in the morning (language and culture) followed by the Spanish Culture course. There will also be 4 optional classes per week (e.g., History, Literature, Traditions and Customs, Phonetics, Cookery Class, Sevillana Dancing, Spanish movie). You will have the afternoon free to visit the town, do homework, etc.

The Spanish Culture course will deal with history, politics, social factors, cultural life and pop culture in Spain from 1936 till present. It will cover the civil war (1936-1939) and the process of transition to democracy that followed Franco's death in 1975. It will also examine the new freedom from censorship after Franco died, the new cinema including Almodovar and Amenabar and the radical changes and modernization in values, family, sex and religion that occurred after the restoration of democracy. During this course you will be asked to watch films and TV programs, to read newspapers and magazines to get closer to Spain and its people.

The last week of the program we will be based in Granada. During our stay in Granada City we will be making day trips to nearby towns. We will visit La Alhambra, a World Heritage site, a palace and fortress complex of the Moorish rulers of Granada. We will visit a sugar factory, a fish farm, a rum factory and other points of interest.
