Course Description: "Politics, Religion, Culture and Media in the Arab World" is a 5-week faculty-led program offering students the opportunity to discuss coverage of global issues and international public affairs and the function of the media in a global context. Topics will include how news is gathered, processed and disseminated by various media in the Middle East, and how the media reflect culture, religion and politics in this part of the world.

Students will spend two weeks in Cairo, Egypt, with visits to Egyptian television and print media. They will be exposed to lectures by practicing journalists and journalism professors. They will continue their study for five days in Amman, Jordan, where they will be led in part by Rami Khouri, a Fellow at NU's Middle East Center, and other professors and professional journalists in the area. The program will conclude in Qatar with Qatar University professors in Communication Studies & Journalism. Students will also visit with professional journalists at al-Jazeera television studios, and participate in interviews with American military personnel in the area. Students will see, through visits to media outlets and from visiting lecturers, how their counterparts in other countries do their job. They will also have to identify story ideas in this unfamiliar and challenging setting, and execute articles as well as a blog. They will be led through this by their professors and also through collaborative work with their "teammates" in the class. That component will reflect the sort of brainstorming and group work that successful journalists must subscribe to in any thriving newsroom environment.

Program is intended for Journalism majors and minors as well as students in Middle East Studies program.
