Italy - Video Production

Dates: TBD

Group leader(s): Vincent Rocchio, v.rocchio@neu.edu

Course description: Based in Rome, this course combines the experience of documentary film-making while exposing students to the art, culture, and political history of Italy that will be the subject of their documentaries. Although this course has a specific focus, it is not limited to Communication majors. Rather, it explores both the craft of documentary with the intensive research that documentary requires. In this respect, the course looks at the ways in which Realism and Modernism exercise enduring roles in the shape and contours of Italian art, culture, and politics, as well as in documentary film production. In particular, the course will analyze these two concepts as more than just art movements or styles, but rather, as cultural logics and dynamics that express themselves through painting, sculpture, architecture and film: responding to shifting political formations and issues. In addition, students will learn all aspects of documentary production: camera work, sound, digital editing, and graphics, using the streets and sites of Rome as their classroom. The course includes tours of the Vatican and Vatican Museums, the Borghese Gallery, the ruins at Ostia Antica, the Colosseum, and Forum, the modern EUR district, and the Capitoline Museum.

This is an interdisciplinary course exposing students to media practice, Italian culture, and theories of cultural studies. Experience in media production is not a requirement. More an important is enthusiasm to explore another culture and to experience first hand how theory can provide a deeper, more complex understanding of culture, art, and politics.
