Program description: In this full semester program students will examine Indian global interventions and organizations through community programs, lectures, site visits and cultural exchanges. The first half of the program will be intensive academic preparation for students who will travel to India to begin Global Corps Practicum training and internships in NGO's.
Courses: Students would enroll in the following courses totaling 16SH.
Global Corps Practicum India (4SH) Students will spend 6 weeks in Hubli, in the Karnataka state of India. Students will work with their Indian peers at a local Non-Government Organizations (NGO) to create community development programs around the theme of poverty, development, and technology. Over three weeks of intensive training with experts in the field, students will learn the key skills of community development work, including action research, leadership skills, organizational development, and cross-cultural communication.
Intercultural Studies through Human Services (4SH) Focuses on students developing an understanding of the social, political, historical, and economic conditions in settings abroad and the corresponding social service and educational interventions. Students will examine Indian culture and organizational responses to health, social and human rights issues. Students will develop an in-depth understanding of change efforts through lectures, cases studies, site visits and cultural exchanges. Particular attention is given to the role of international aid and organizations, gender based violence, and the political, social and economic conditions in which non-profit organizations operate. Students will also apply basic research principles to develop an independent project evaluating best practices in social service programming in an international setting.
Transnational Activism and Global Civil Society (4SH) This course examines transnational advocacy and activism from both theoretical and practical aspects Students will explore the growing literature of transnational activism with a focus on the impact of such movements upon global and local civil society and issues of democratization and development. This course will also include explorations of the influence of Indian politics and culture upon global civil society.
Leadership & International Program Development (4SH) This course introduces students to event-planning, program-planning/development, and management skills that are essential to the implementation of domestic and international programs. Leadership models and practices in these settings will be critiqued through theory and case studies. Students will apply planning theories/models and evaluation techniques in service-learning settings. This course will consider the elements of successful partnerships and collaborations through the execution of a final project in Hubli.
