Iceland

Dates: TBA (soon!)

Group leader(s): Malcolm Hill, Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, 14 Holmes, m.hill@neu.edu

Course description: "Volcanism and Glaciation in Iceland: Impacts on Society" is a 4-week study of the active glacial and volcanic geology of Iceland, and the influences these processes have had in shaping the way that Icelandic people have interacted with their environment both today and in the past. In addition to learning about the geology of glaciers, volcanoes and plate tectonics, course experiences have been chosen to help you learn about Icelandic history and sustainable use of subsurface (geothermal energy and hot water), land (farmland, soil erosion and reforestation efforts), and marine resources (fishing industry).

People interested in ecotourism will find Iceland a great example to study. Applicants from any major, not just the sciences, are encouraged to apply. The Iceland Dialogues involves a good deal of walking, some strenuous hikes (which some people may elect not to do), and camping and outdoor study in occasionally rainy or windy weather. We make our way around the country in a large bus, and will stay at campgrounds most of the time and occasionally, perhaps, indoors at a hostel.

Prerequisites: Permission of instructor (Hill)

Course credits: ENV U 501 = 4 SH; IAF U 937 = 4 SH

Cost of program: Depending on the number of students, extra costs may range from $500 to $1000 per student. In 2009, we are planning for Summer 2 (July-into-August), a more expensive time to do just about anything in Iceland (the high season for tourism), but the interior roads will be drier, and the weather on average a little warmer than we had in the Summer 1, 2008 Dialogues. The exact surcharge will not be known, probably, until January or February 2009.

Application Process: Download the Dialogue of Civilizations application, enrollment form, and waiver form. Turn in two copies of each completed form and two copies of your unofficial transcript to the Office of International Study Programs in 10 BV.

Application Deadline: November 14, 2008
