Dates: (tentative) May 8 - June 15, 2010
Group leader(s): Catherine Dunand
Course description: This program consists of two courses, one in French language and one in contemporary French culture. The courses are held in Annecy, in eastern France between Geneva and Chambery. Annecy is one of the most beautiful resort towns of the French Alps and is often referred to as the "Venice of Savoie." The town is situated on the shore of Lake Annecy, which is one of the cleanest lakes in the world. A trip to Paris will launch this special experience of France.
1) French Language Immersion (FRNH 1202, 2201, 2202, 3201, 3202) This is an intensive immersion French course, which focuses on the development of all the four language skills (speaking, writing, listening, reading). The courses are specially designed for Northeastern students. Students attend regularly scheduled intensive language classes in the morning (20 hours/week), which are supplemented by the linguistic and cultural immersion experience. In addition, students will stay with French families who have been carefully selected and screened and matched with students. This will further support and develop students' French fluency.
2) Contemporary French Culture (INTL 4939) This course will study French culture from the unique perspective that is offered by the city of Annecy. Due to its unique location at the foot of the Alps, Annecy and the surrounding region has had a turbulent history suffering through many invasions, most recently the German occupation during World War II. The course will take advantage of the numerous historic sites around Annecy including visits to the Castle of Annecy, the 13th century Chateau of Montrottier, the Gorges du Fier (one of the most stunning and attractive curiosities of the French Alps).
