China - Language

Dates (tentative): May 11 - June 20, 2009

Group Leader: Prof. Hua Dong, h.dong@neu.edu

Course Description: This course provides intensive Chinese language training, cultural studies and internship opportunities in China. Students will take Chinese classes 20 hours/week, and intern in a Chinese company or institution for 10-15 hours/week. Placement of internship will try to match students' field of study, skills and interests, and cover a wide range of sectors such as marketing, finance and banking, real estate, engineering, tourism, NGOs, education, media and publishing. Students will typically have four hours of language classes in the morning (two hours of instruction and two hours of drills), and be paired up with Chinese college students for an hour-long language partner program. Students will spend the afternoons of the first two weeks on dialogues with leading business people, scholars, government officials, journalists, artists, and their peer students. We will also visit NGOs, migrant schools, companies run by Chinese and expatriates, before the students start their own internship in the afternoons of the last two weeks. With the upcoming World Expo in Shanghai, the students will be engaged in the activities related to the high-profile international event.

The language training is embedded in the Chinese setting, amounting to one semester of classroom learning at the Northeastern University. Students also have the opportunity to spend time on weekends with host families to experience the daily lives and customs of Chinese families. The program will be based in Nanjing, a historic city with long and influential history as the capital of six dynasties, and is only two hours by train north of Shanghai. The program will also visit historic, political, and cultural sites in Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing.
