China - Urban Architecture, Planning, and Design

Course Description: The purpose of this program is for students to learn about the impact of China�s cultural, economic, and political context on architecture, urban planning, and design. At the same time, the students will learn about the impact of international economic and cultural trends and developments on Chinese architecture, urban planning, and design, as well as how the Chinese approach to architecture, design, and urban planning, are influencing world culture. In studying the world�s fastest growing urbanization process, students will learn about the differences in scale of both contemporary and historic urban fabric, building types, and development types. Students will produce case studies comparing and contrasting these elements. Students will be required to have learned 50 Chinese words (minimal) before they leave for China, and to have read 4 (minimal) of the books below and done reports on them. In China, students will take �survival Chinese� classes for 12 to 15 mornings (2 hours/day), and will be tested. Students are expected to attend all classes, lectures, and participate in all activities.

Costs: Summer tuition for 8 NU credits plus additional costs TBD.

Application Process: Students are required to be interviewed and to have at least one course in urban architecture, design, or planning. Please submit two copies of the DOC application and Waiver form and two copies of your unofficial transcript to OISP in 10 Belvidere.

*Please note: If this course does not fill, it may accept students who do not have the prerequisites but do have an interest in the topic.
