This program offers students an opportunity to live and study in the heart of Europe for an academic Semester. Students will take three academic courses and participate in a research internship, which earns course credit. During the internship each student will work with the office of a European Parliament Member on a project designed to provide the Member with specific information about a subject on the Parliament's agenda.
Northeastern students will choose three of the following courses:
The fourth course is the research internship mentioned above. Students will develop their project in consultation with a faculty member of the Irish Institute and the Member of the European Parliament.
Courses taken abroad may satisfy college and departmental core requirements. Students should consult with their advisor to discuss the specific requirements that may be satisfied abroad.
Leuven, which is only thirty minutes from Brussels, grew up around its famous university. With a population of 80,000, it is also an important commercial center and the capital of the province, Brabant. Its restaurants, cafes, and stores have adapted themselves to the presence of students over hundreds of years. It is a picturesque city, containing some of the original cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways.
The Louvain Institute for Ireland in Europe was originally established in 1607 as a Franciscan college for religious education. Now the Institute is a member of the University of Leuven, the oldest Catholic University in Europe, founded in 1425. This affiliation enables the Institute to draw upon the rich resources of the University, including: libraries, sports clubs, computer facilities, and social activities.
All students live at the Institute in shared accommodations with other students on the program. Each room has a bathroom and shower. Bed linens and some meals are included.

"Belgium was the greatest experience of my college career. The program and the people I met have positively shaped my life. I would like to encourage others to have the same experience as me. It was unforgetable and amazing!"
