The Australian National Internships Program (ANIP) is a very competitive and challenging program organized by the Graduate School of Public Administration for Australian graduate and undergraduate students. Recently, however, ANU has opened the program to qualified international students. ANIP combines courses taken at the Australian National University with an internship at the Australian Parliament, Public Service Organizations (i.e. Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australian Sports Commission), or Non-Governmental Organizations (i.e. Greening Australia, Australian Youth Policy). You do not need to be a political science student to take advantage of this program. ANIP has placed students who major in chemistry, art, economics, and music.
The internship program is worth 12 NU credits:
You can earn up to 16 NU credits if you take an additional course from ANU's regular course offerings in addition to the internship program.
Courses taken abroad may satisfy college and departmental core requirements. Students should consult with their advisor to discuss the specific requirements that may be satisfied abroad.
Canberra is often described as a city scattered through a park, with Lake Burley Griffin as the centerpiece and focus of much recreational activity. Canberra is a planned city with a population of 300,000. It is only a few hours from snow-covered mountains, beaches, and Sydney. This national capital has excellent research, science, technology, sporting, and cultural facilities, including the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Library, and Parliament House. Canberra is one of the few cities in Australia to experience four distinct seasons with summers averaging 85 degrees F during the day, delightful springs and autumns, and crOISP winters when overnight temperatures can drop to about 22 degrees F.
Established specifically to be Australia’s national research powerhouse, the Australian National University (ANU) is internationally recognized as an outstanding university. Made up of 10,000 students, its size and the presence of top libraries make it a very supportive academic environment. The 370-acre campus is located within walking distance from the civic center of Canberra.
Students studying on the internship program usually stay in Fenner Hall, which is located 2.5km from campus and close to the city center. Fenner Hall is also on a major bus route making it convenient to both internship and classes. Accommodations are comfortable single study-bedrooms, which are centrally heated, carpeted, and fully furnished. Bathrooms, laundries, and recreation areas are shared.

Kytt MacManus, Fall 2005
"I worked for Senator Gary Humphries of the Australian National Territory in both his Parliamentary and Regional offices. Not only did I get a first-hand look at the workings of the Australian federal government, but the state government as well. This was unique among the interns and I feel privileged that I, as the only American intern, was able to have what really was a dual experience."
