Description

The program, based at the University of Ho Chi Minh City, emphasizes independent field study as much as classroom learning. You will visit areas of the South, including the rice basket Mekong River Delta and sites associated with recent Vietnamese history. You will also travel north to Hanoi, the nation's capital, which has a very different flavor, visiting en route locations such as the imperial capital of Hue, the former U.S. military center of DaNang and the coastal town of Nha Trang.

The Independent Study Project mentioned above allows students to investigate and research their own topics of study. Students will develop a project in consultation with a program faculty member.

Courses taken abroad may satisfy college and departmental core requirements. Students should consult with their advisor to discuss the specific requirements that may be satisfied abroad.

Destination

Viet Nam, the new "Asian tiger" holds a pivotal place in contemporary U.S. consciousness. Recovering from decades of war and subsequent isolation, the country is opening rapidly to foreign business investment, diplomatic cooperation, and education exchange. Ho Chi Minh City, often still called Saigon, was the capital of the former U.S.-supported Republic of Viet Nam and is a vibrant commercial center with nearly four million people.

Program Components

In this unique program you advance from a structured learning environment to a more independent one as the Semester progresses. Each component of the program leads you to a comprehensive understanding of the Vietnamese culture. The seven interrelated components are: Program Orientation, Intensive Language Study, Homestay, Culture & Development Seminar (including lectures, readings and discussions on Vietnamese History, Politics, Geography, Economics, Cultural Anthropology, Arts & Humanities, and field trips), Methods and Techniques of Field Study Seminar, Independent Study Project, and Program Evaluation.

Accommodation

Accommodations during the program include homestays, guest houses, hostels, educational institutions, or small hotels. Home hospitality arrangements are facilitated to afford opportunities for optimal cultural learning.

Eligibility Requirements

Full-time Northeastern student, 2.5 GPA, and middler (third) year or above.

Applications are available at OISP, 10 BV.

Cost

$21,400 per Semester for the 2009/2010 academic year. Includes: tuition, administration fees, housing, meals, orientation, course-related field trips, and round-trip airfare via Boston. Students are responsible for paying a $400 dollar fee directly to School for International Training upon acceptance.
