The Faculty of Law is one of the most prestigious in the Netherlands. It is a medium-sized and efficiently run faculty with well-established contacts in the legal and judicial institutions in the Netherlands and abroad. Located in the capital city of a country with a long tradition of international trade, the law faculty is experienced in teaching students about an open legal system. Students will also have access to courses at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
International students can choose from a number of courses taught in English or Dutch. Students take four master's level courses in the areas of criminology and international law.
The University campus and University hospital are situated in the south-western part of Amsterdam, one of the most dynamic and fast-growing business districts in the Netherlands. The international airport of Schiphol-Amsterdam is 10 kilometres away, just 8 minutes by train. With more than fifty undergraduate (or bachelor’s) programmes and almost a hundred postgraduate (or master’s) programmes, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers a wide choice of study options. The programmes are of a high quality, the atmosphere is very conducive to study, and the teaching staff is easily accessible.
Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has been a renowned cultural, scientific and commercial centre for many centuries. It was here, in 1880, that Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam first opened its doors to students. 'Vrije Universiteit' means 'Free University'. Here, 'free' refers to freedom of state and church interference. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam was established in 1880 by orthodox protestants. Nowadays it aims to be inspiring, innovative and involved. Throughout the past century, the university has continued to expand. It now comprises twelve faculties and has teaching facilities for 18,000 students.
Accommodation consists of furnished rooms with private or shared facilities. Housing is limited and is not guaranteed. Students pay rent during the semester and are responsible for a refundable housing deposit.

$19,400 per semester for the 2009/2010 academic year. Includes tuition and round-trip airfare. Housing and meals are not included.
