Ell & Merit Scholars

To simplify financial aid policies for study abroad, the University would like to make clear just which aspects of study abroad your Ell or New England Merit Scholarship will cover.

The Northeastern study abroad program fee includes tuition, room, airfare and sometimes meals. All students receiving a full scholarship made up of NU funds may use the tuition portion of their scholarship to cover the tuition cost of the study abroad program. However, the student must pay the remainder of the program fee that includes room, airfare, etc.

To give an example, let's assume that the total study abroad fee is $18,700 and Northeastern tuition is $15,750. An Ell scholar would be able to use his or her scholarship to cover $15,750 tuition cost of the total program fee, but would still have to pay the remaining $2,950 out of his or her own pocket.

If the student has additional need, Student Financial Serives in 356 Richards Hall may assist with these additional costs. In addition, students who receive outside scholarship aid may be able to apply that money towards their remaining program costs. Students should consult with their outside scholarship administrator for specific information.
