Helpful Tips

Before you Move:

  • Plan ahead! Since many people move around the same time, it’s important to reserve a moving truck or service plenty of time in advance.  This will save you time and unnecessary stress.
  • Forward your info! Make sure to inform the post office, electric, and cable company, and anyone else that you receive mail from that you are moving to a new location.
  • Drop the excess baggage! Avoid moving things you don’t really need. It’s time consuming and physically demanding. If you don’t use it now, you probably won’t use it later! Old clothes, furniture, or books that are in good condition can also be donated to charity.
  • Be smart about your moving service! If you choose to hire a moving company, make sure that the service has established a good reputation.  Choosing a service that is inexperienced or unreliable will waste time and money.
  • Get all the help you can! Enlisting the help of friends and family will make the process go by smoother and faster.
  • Make a survival kit! Pack a small bag of essentials to keep with you, including tools, to make the transition and first night in your new home smoother.

During your Move:

  • Box it up! Boxes of all shapes and sizes are available from various merchants and moving companies.  Make sure that the boxes are clean and in good condition. Purchase plenty of duct tape to seal the boxes.
  • Prioritize! Not everything you pack needs to be unpacked immediately.  Using labels to designate the priority of different boxes in addition to what room they belong in will make unpacking more efficient.

After your Move :

  • Get to know your area! Spend the first few days in your new home exploring the area, and make sure to locate the nearest supermarket, post office, bank, etc. Also, check the city website to find out more about activities going on in your new neighborhood.
