26-39 Loss VS. AIC

Despite an undesirable outcome, the Northeastern Men’s Rugby Team showed flashes of brilliance this past Saturday. The highlight of the day may have been five players earning their first ever cap in a Husky jersey. David Murphy, the freshman lock from California, even scored a try in his first game, thundering in from 8 meters out.

Northeastern kicked off the scoring with a penalty kick from hooker Chris Laughlin, 3-0 NU. AIC would strike next, hitting a kick to even the score at 3-3. They would score a try off an errant pass from a Northeastern lineout to put AIC up 8-3. Undeterred, the Huskies would march down the field on two consecutive drives and Laughlin would slot one through both times to put NU up 9-8. AIC would score twice more before the half to make the score 22-9 going into halftime.

After the half, AIC scored once more to go up 29-9 before the Huskies decided to mount a comeback. David Murphy kicked off the try scoring for Northeastern by taking a pass from fly half Shane Tyksinski and barreling into the try zone. Laughlin slotted an incredibly difficult kick from the sideline to make the score 29-16 AIC. Soon after, AIC took a penalty kick to make the score 32-16. NU struck back with a penalty kick from Laughlin to make the score 29-19. Next, a NU quick tap and pass to Jared Veruto saw the big man demolish two would be tacklers on his way into the try zone. Kick good, 2632 AIC. Just as it seemed the Maddog would march back down the field and win the game with a try, an errant pass from the ruck led to a turnover and quick try for AIC as time expired.

A tough loss to be sure, but there was much to be learned from Saturday’s game. The Maddog next travels to UMass Amherst this Saturday to take on the Minutemen in their second league game of the year.

If you can make the trip, come watch the Huskies this Saturday in Amherst!
