Debbie Lyn Toomey, RN, CIPP, is an experienced nurse and nurse entrepreneur. Debbie participated in our recent Nurse Leadership & Entrepreneurship Certificate Program and was kind enough to submit this lovely blog outlining her own personal entrepreneurial journey.
“Hello, my name is Debbie and I will be taking care of you today.”
I have said this greeting countless times to patients over my 30+ years working as a nurse at Tufts Medical Center Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. I love helping people feel better and that’s why I became a nurse. More importantly, I am passionate about teaching people how to access their own mind and body’s inner-physician for optimum health and well-being.
Little did I know when I went into nursing school in 1984 that I was going to be an author and entrepreneur someday.
In the present, I’m a part-time nurse and full-time entrepreneur owning a health and wellness consulting and training company. This company is my way of bringing bedside nursing beyond my scheduled shifts. I always knew the value of health prevention and I decided to follow my intuition and do something about it.
How could someone like me—someone who possessed little to no business experience, disliked writing, and feared public speaking—become an entrepreneur?
In retrospect, it’s simple.
I followed my heart and my gut…my instinct.
Health and Happiness
I’ve always valued health and happiness. Being a nurse, I found that one impacted the other. After taking care of hundreds of patients with stress-related ailments such as chest pain, asthma exacerbation, GI bleed, drug overdose, failure to thrive and so much more, I witnessed how stress can turn a person into a patient. As a medical-surgical nurse, I noticed how positivity and optimism helped patients heal faster and go home sooner! I learned that health and happiness go hand in hand. Unfortunately, not too many people knew about it.
Leap of Faith
That’s when I decided to trust my intuition and volunteered at my church doing stress management workshops for parishioners. It was a leap of faith that opened up a whole new world for me. I discovered that I loved doing workshops and wanted to do more so that I would help more people. Doing these programs inspired me to do it professionally.
Beyond the Bedside
Over five years ago, I started my company, Ultimate Healing Journey, LLC. It’s a company that allowed me to consult, coach, and speak about health and wellness. Companies, organizations, and schools hired me to speak or train them on topics of happiness, gratitude, and mindfulness for increased productivity, positivity in the workplace, and stress management.
I published three books. Writing these books gave me clarity at so many different levels both personally and professionally. In my books, I revealed the seven pillars that I have cultivated to feel good about myself. Moreover, publishing these books gave my company greater recognition. My books, The Happiness Result – More time, More health, More love, More success. And its companion workbook, The Happiness Result – Goals, Gratitude, and Success Journal have increased my company’s visibility and value. This year, I published a coloring book, The Happiness Result Art Therapy Coloring Book as another stress reduction tool to help teenagers and adults feel better.
As my nursing career continues, so does my entrepreneurial journey. I highly recommend nurses with innovative ideas to embark on this path. Admittedly, it may not be the easiest one to take, but it is one of the most meaningful, rewarding, and exciting ones that you will ever experience!
As for me, I know by now to follow my intuition because it somehow knows what is best for me and my company. Whenever I feel unworthy, out of place, and insecure about offering new programs, I always remind myself who I am. That I am, Debbie Lyn Toomey, and I am here to take care of them.
After all, I am a nurse at heart and a nurse is a nurse, no matter what.
