Northeastern Appoints Two Senior Executives as Sr. VP of External Affairs and VP of Marketing and Communications
Northeastern University has appointed two senior executives who will build on the university’s strong momentum as a national research university. Carol Scheman will be the university’s new senior vice president for external affairs, and Michael Armini will be vice president for marketing and communications. “Carol and Mike will work jointly to expand the scope of our community engagement and message on the national stage,” said Joseph E. Aoun, president of Northeastern. “They bring to the university tremendous experience, excellence in strategic leadership and a proven record of delivering results. I welcome them to the Northeastern community.” Scheman’s expertise encompasses government relations, particularly at the federal level, and strategic communications. Currently vice president for external affairs at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, she has served as vice president for government, community and public affairs at the University of Pennsylvania, deputy commissioner for external affairs at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and vice president of the Association of American Universities. In her new role, which begins Nov. 1, Scheman will have general oversight of the university’s external affairs, including marketing, communications, government relations and community outreach. “President Aoun’s historic vision for Northeastern first drew me to the university, and the more I saw of its faculty, its students and its commitment to a profound mission, the more I became convinced this was the place to be in higher education,” said Scheman, who will begin Nov. 1. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to represent Northeastern, especially on the national stage, at a time of such great momentum and promise.” Scheman holds a master of science in social administration from Case Western Reserve University and a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Boston University. Armini, who has extensive experience in national media and public relations, is assistant dean for communications at Harvard Law School. He formerly served as director of communications for the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study, and has worked in Washington as a congressional press secretary. He holds a master’s degree from Emerson College and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. "I'm thrilled to be joining Northeastern at a time of tremendous energy and momentum," said Armini. "For a communications professional, there's nothing better than working with a dynamic leader who is taking an institution to the next level. I can't wait to get started." Armini begins at Northeastern on Oct. 14. About Northeastern Founded in 1898, Northeastern University is a private research university located in the heart of Boston.
