Renowned Northeastern University Artist to Debut UNIFORM

The police force has a long history. What was once a segregated entity in white America at the turn of the century, the force is now one of the most integrated.  A novel series of larger-than-life-size drawings in black and white titled UNIFORM by celebrated artist and Northeastern University professor Mira Cantor explores the men and women in blue. From January 15 through March 27, UNIFORM will be shown at the Moakley Federal Courthouse in Boston.

“It was my intention to look beyond the uniform at the wide range of men and women that serve the community and put their lives on the line everyday,” said Cantor. “These are people like you and me who go home to families and have normal lives. UNIFORM is about the collective and the individual. The exhibit explores the police as an integrated force and the individual police person.”

Cantor began to examine this idea two years ago at Northeastern University where there is a prominent police force. As a professor of art, she wanted to commemorate those who serve the university community and give them recognition in the form of large portraits.  Soon Cantor decided to expand her project to include the Boston Police Department.

Police officers visited Cantor at her studio where she drew and asked the officers about their work and lives. Using photographs and sketches, she created 25 charcoal drawings of policemen and policewomen to honor their service to the community.

UNIFORM pays tribute to the courageous men and women who serve the city. The exhibition acknowledges the individuals behind each uniform, who joined the force for myriad reasons.
