Northeastern University Announces 3rd Open Classroom Policy Series

“Economic Growth with Equity” class open to community members

How do we grow the economy and provide equal opportunity in America? Northeastern University again invites the community to participate in a new series of classes taught through the innovative Open Classroom Policy Series, which will engage an exciting lineup of experts to explore these challenges and innovative solutions. Beginning January 7, it will feature notable guest speakers and intellectually stimulating dialogue on Wednesday nights throughout the spring semester.

The graduate level course, titled "Economic Growth with Equity," will be led by Barry Bluestone, Stearns Trustee professor of political economy, director of the Kitty and Michael Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional policy, and dean of the School of Social Science, Urban Affairs, and Public Policy; and Cathy Minehan, partner of Arlington Advisory Partners and former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston (1994-2007).

“The Open Classroom Graduate Seminar on Economic Growth with Equity brings together data on historical trends in growth and distribution, reviews alternative theories used to explain economic growth and income inequality, and focuses on various policies to enhance both growth and equity,” said Bluestone. “The Policy School at Northeastern is excited to have the opportunity to continue offering these timely courses in which community members are welcome to participate.”

The course is free and open to the public and will cover the broad range of factors that contribute to economic growth and what policies may help assure that the fruits of economic growth are shared equitably. Topics will include issues that make economies prosper and decline, factors that affect the distribution of income and wealth, private policies and practices that enable growth and equity, and public policies that enhance growth and contribute to more broadly shared prosperity.
