Will I need a passport to travel to Greece?
All participants will need a passport. Participants who do not already have a passport should apply for one as soon as possible. US Citizens can find more information at the US Department of State passport site. Passports must be valid for at least three months after they are scheduled to leave Greece. Any students whose passports are due to expire before April 2010 should renew them now.
Where will NUin participants be living while in Greece?
Participants will be living together in fully-furnished studios in apartment complexes in downtown Thessaloniki.
What other activities will students be able to do in Greece?
While studying at ACT, students will have the opportunity to partake in various excursions as part of their coursework. The program includes two field trips. Staff will also coordinate free and low-cost activities in Thessaloniki and surrounding environs. There is a week-long semester break where they can travel to different parts of Greece if they choose — Thessaloniki is also within hours of Bulgaria and Turkey. Additionally, through the Global Experience course, students will be participating in civic engagement community service activities in order to enhance their understanding of the local people and culture.
Is there an orientation in Greece?
Yes, upon arrival in Greece, there is a on-site orientation, and classes will begin on September 21.
What is communication like in the residence halls?
Participants will have access to the internet in their rooms. However, internet communication is very different in Greece than in the US, and students should not expect the same level and speed of connectivity as they would here. There are times when the connections do not work at all, and there are times when the connection is intermittent.
Will I need a visa to study in Greece?
You will need to apply for a Student Visa, at the approximate cost of $50 USD. More information on applying will be given to enrolled students.
Do I need health insurance?
As part of this program, participants will be covered for basic insurance while in Greece. Supplemental insurance is encouraged. Interested students should check now to see if they have international coverage from their current healthcare provider. If they do not, there is an overseas option to be covered while in Greece.
