This student residence was created from three nineteenth century townhouses and is just an eight-minute walk from Foundation House, FIE's main academic facility, and a three-minute walk from the amenities of Gloucester Road. Metrogate houses the main FIE computer facility and sits across the road from Imperial College. Common rooms are cleaned, and bed linen is provided on a weekly basis. Metrogate is situated up a short flight of steps from street level, and an elevator serves all floors except the top (fifth) floor. Given the historic nature of the building, this residence has been retrofitted to be suitable for students, and as such, bedrooms vary greatly in size and layout.
Metrogate Residence Features
South Kensington Area
FIE study and housing facilities are located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, one of London’s most desirable areas.
- FIE is located near schools such as Imperial College, the Royal College of Art, and the Royal College of Music.
- Just down the street are some of the world’s great cultural institutions, including the Royal Albert Hall, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Natural History Museum.
- Kensington is home to charming residential areas where famous residents of the present (Madonna, Hugh Grant, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise) mix with the ghosts of those who lived in the area in the past (T.S. Eliot, J.S. Mill and Beatrix Potter).
- Students live and study near some of London’s most fashionable streets, including Gloucester Road, where students will find banks, a post office, pubs, restaurants, and grocery stores; and High Street Kensington, one of London’s premier shopping streets.
Getting to the rest of the city is easy and convenient. The area is served by a number of underground (tube) and bus routes, opening up the whole city to the curious visitor. Foundation House is located near the corner of Gloucester and Cromwell Roads, at the Gloucester Road tube stop. From here, students have instant access to the Piccadilly, Circle and District Tube lines.
The Metrogate residence is about a 7-minute walk from Foundation House, the main building in which students take the majority of their classes. The residence is also a 5 minute walk to Hyde Park, and a 10 minute walk to the shopping areas on Kensington High Street. Students are also a few minutes from Imperial College. Gloucester Road is the closest Tube station, found at the intersection of Gloucester Road and Cromwell Road. Students can take the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines from this station. Please see the transportation section of this website for more information.Laundry
There are laundry facilities located in the basement of the Metrogate Residence Hall. The basement holds five washing machines and five dryers. One washing machine cycle costs £2.20, while a dryer cycle is £1.00. There are also ironing boards available in the laundry room. Students must provide their own detergent.Kitchens & Washing Dishes
Each floor in Metrogate shares a common kitchen. These kitchens are fully equipped with dishes, silverware, pots and pans, microwaves, and stoves. While figuring out how to plan and prepare meals may seem overwhelming at first, former N.U.in students adjusted during their time in London. As kitchens are a shared amenity, students must courteous of their flatmates and wash their dishes frequently. Dirty dishes can attract pests, bugs, and angry flatmates. Our recommendation is to establish some ground rules and expectations around food, cooking, and cleaning up upon moving in. This will help flatmates understand what is expected of them and facilitate communication should issues arise later.Computer Access
There is a computer lab in the basement of Metrogate that is shared with the three other FIE residences, Manson Place, 123 Queen’s Gate, and Hyde Park Gate. This computer lab contains roughly 25 desktop PCs with hard-wired Ethernet connections, two laser printers, and a scanner. Students may use wireless printing at a quota of 50 pages for free, and pay 5 pence per page thereafter.
